Review of Huerta (2016) Sacando del armario lo que debe estar en las aulas

2017

The work presented is the review of the book “Transeducar. Arte, docencia y derechos LGTB” written by Ricard Huerta. This is a recession with the aim of promoting the reading of the issue and publicizing its strengths. In line with some other reading recommendations I have found published in your magazine, I think it might be interesting for Athenead's readers.

The role played by doctors, the Government and the who in the implementation of poliomyelitis, measles and rubella serological surveys in Spain (1958…

2020

Serological surveys, which acquired considerable importance in the mid twentieth century, are still a key tool to address infectious diseases. This article, using archival and printed sources from the WHO and the medical and general press, analyses the role of doctors and scientists, government, and the WHO in the implementation of serological surveys to evaluate the situation of poliomyelitis, measles and rubella in Spain and to set up a plan of action against them. The paper shows the role of Florencio Pérez Gallardo and his group at the National School of Health, favoured by the Franco regime to receive the support of WHO collaborative programmes after Spain joined in 1951, and the impac…

The Case of “EMU-Outsiders”: Economic and Political Considerations

2016

Our paper discusses the option of three EU countries – United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark – of not joining the EMU and analyses whether besides their subjective option of staying out of the EMU there is also an economic reason behind this decision, based on existing literature in the field. The three “EMU-outsiders” are different in terms of economic power, financial market attributes, monetary policy rules employed and political decisions. In each case, the choice to remain outside EMU was based on economic reasons, as well as political and sometimes nationalist arguments. Of the three countries under scrutiny, Denmark is by far the one which has the best prospects of joining EMU, given it…

Concepts and Concept Formation in Early Modern Philosophy

2013

The Renaissance witnessed a revival of ancient and Arabic philosophical traditions, such as Platonism, Skepticism and Averroism. Renaissance syncretism was especially influential at the universities in Northern Italy, where several scholars reinterpreted Medieval Latin conceptions of intelligible species. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century, university teaching in most European universities was dominated by second scholasticism. Francisco Suarez was the most philosophically inventive, as well as most influential, among these early modern scholastics (1).
