Visualizing linguistic variation in a network of Latin documents and scribes

This article explores whether and how network visualization can benefit philological and historical-linguistic study. This is illustrated with a corpus-based investigation of scribes' language use in a lemmatized and morphologically annotated corpus of documentary Latin (Late Latin Charter Treebank, LLCT2). We extract four continuous linguistic variables from LLCT2 and utilize a gradient colour palette in Gephi to visualize the variable values as node attributes in a trimodal network which consists of the documents, writers, and writing locations underlying the same corpus. This article studies the nationalistic rhetoric in Emerson’s “The American Scholar.” It argues that if the current critical tendency to downplay the essay’s nationalism can be seen as a welcome corrective to certain traditional readings, the address, in fact, includes a significant presence of embedded nationalistic rhetoric that has largely been ignored. The study focuses on Emerson ’s incorporation of the language of expansionism and imperialism, his adoption of an ahistorical perspective and his use of the vocabulary of action, heroism and Anglo-Saxonism to show that both the address’s nationalistic rhetoric and Emerson ’s complicity in the nationalistic ideology of his time are more pro…

This article offers a short analysis of the different meanings and connotations of the three names given in 1525 by Toledo's Holy Office to the new Cas lian here cs-the « alumbrados », also called « dexados » and « perfects ». In order to be exhaustive, this taxinomic study of Castilian illuminism adds the name « recogidos » to this list, since those spirituals are often mentioned in the testimonies included in the trials.
