Der Gaius der Preußen

The discovery of the Palimpsest of the Gaius' Institutions in 1816 occurred at the height of palimpsest research and is part of a broader controversy among German and Italian scholars at that time. The deciphering of the lower stratum of the palimpsest and its first publication was supported by the Preußische Akademie der Wissenschaften and was considered as a product of German intellectual spirit. The transcriptions were transferred to the Akademie der Wissenschaften and later to the Königliche Bibliothek of Berlin. Today they are preserved in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. They still constitute an indispensable basis for the constitutio textus of Gaius' Institutions.

Palliative Care Education in Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum in Italy

Worldwide, more than 19 million people require palliative care because of an advanced stage of disease. Undergraduate nursing education should include palliative care as the European consensus suggests. In 2004, the European Society of Palliative Care issued a guide for the development of palliative nurse education in Europe. Melanocortins in Brain Inflammation: The Role of Melanocortin Receptor Subtypes

The melanocortins (MC) are released from neurons and paracrine cells in the CNS where they are involved in important physiological functions, including regulation of body temperature and immune responses. MC bind to melanocortin receptors, a class of cell surface G-protein-coupled receptors. Of the five subtypes of MC receptors that have been cloned in mammals, the MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5 receptors are expressed in brain tissues. Expression of MC receptors in both brain cells and cells of the immune system suggests direct involvement of MC in regulation of inflammatory processes in the brain. PTHrP is encoded by PTHLH gene which can generate by alternative promoter usage and splicing mechanisms at least three mature peptides of 139, 141 and 173 amino acids with distinct carboxy terminus. Distribution and Dynamics of Transcription-Associated Proteins during Parvovirus Infection

ABSTRACT Canine parvovirus (CPV) infection leads to reorganization of nuclear proteinaceous subcompartments. Our studies showed that virus infection causes a time-dependent increase in the amount of viral nonstructural protein NS1 mRNA. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching showed that the recovery kinetics of nuclear transcription-associated proteins, TATA binding protein (TBP), transcription factor IIB (TFIIB), and poly(A) binding protein nuclear 1 (PABPN1) were different in infected and noninfected cells, pointing to virus-induced alterations in binding dynamics of these proteins.
