Some Applications of the Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem

We consider a C 1 vector field X defined on an open subset U of the plane, with compact closure. If X has no singular points and if U is simply connected, a weak version of the Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem says that the limit sets of X in U are empty but that one can defined non empty extended limit sets contained into the boundary of U. We give an elementary proof of this result, independent of the classical Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem. The mapping class group of an orientable surface with one boundary component, S, is isomorphic to a subgroup of the automorphism group of the fundamental group of S. We call these subgroups algebraic mapping class groups. An algebraic mapping class group acts on a space called ordered Auter space. We apply Poincaré's Polyhedron theorem to this action. We describe a decomposition of ordered Auter space. From these results, we deduce that the algebraic mapping class group of S is a quotient of the fundamental group of a graph of groups with, at most, two vertices and, at most, six edges. Sourcing on the internet: Examining the relations among different phases of online inquiry

This study examined students’ engagement in sourcing throughout online inquiry, that is, when they specified the information need, formulated search queries, evaluated online texts, and composed a written product. Participants were 167 upper secondary school students. Students completed an online inquiry task in a restricted online environment that utilized authentic online texts. Students’ prior topic knowledge and reading fluency was measured and controlled for in the analysis. The results showed that students engaged in sourcing even in the earliest phases of online inquiry. Sharp capacity estimates for annuli in weighted R^n and in metric spaces

We obtain estimates for the nonlinear variational capacity of annuli in weighted R^n and in metric spaces. We introduce four different (pointwise) exponent sets, show that they all play fundamental roles for capacity estimates, and also demonstrate that whether an end point of an exponent set is attained or not is important. As a consequence of our estimates we obtain, for instance, criteria for points to have zero (resp. positive) capacity. Our discussion holds in rather general metric spaces, including Carnot groups and many manifolds, but it is just as relevant on weighted R^n.
