Rapid Evaluation of Oxidized Fatty Acid Concentration in Virgin Olive Oils Using Metal Oxide Semiconductor Sensors and Multiple Linear Regression

2009

This works aims to set up a rapid and nondestructive method to evaluate the advanced oxidation of virgin olive oils (VOOs). An electronic nose based on an array of six metal oxide semiconductor sensors was used, jointly with multiple linear regression (MLR), to predict the oxidized fatty acid (OFA) concentration in VOO samples characterized by different oxidative status. An MLR model constructed using five predictors was able to predict OFA concentration with an average validation error of 9%.

Photoinduced magnetization wave in diluted magnetic semiconductors

2006

We derive an evolutional equation incorporating the processes of spin-polarization transfer from an electron to a magnetic ion subsystem of a diluted magnetic semiconductor along with spin-lattice relaxation and spatial spin diffusion. Above equation has been obtained for nonequilibrium magnetization due to exchange scattering of photoexcited charge carriers by magnetic ions. We show that the mechanism of a band gap narrowing due to exchange scattering requires relatively low optical power to reach an optical bistability for pump frequency range close to crystal band gap. In a bulk crystal, only relatively small local area with essential magnetization enhancement can absorb optical power, t…

The Properties of Co2Cr1-xFexAl Heusler Compounds

2006

The classical concept of band structure tuning as used for semiconductors by partly replacing one atom by a chemical neighbor without altering the structure is applied examplarily to the half-metallic ferromagnetic Heusler compound Co 2 Cr 1 - x Fe x Al. Band structure calculations are presented for ordered and disordered compounds. We present experimental and theoretical results. The connection between specific site disorder and the band structure is shown explicitly with particular emphasis on the half-metallic properties. Experimentally observed deviations from the ideal Heusler structure and from the simple Slater-Pauling rule for the magnetization are discussed in close relation to the…

The Shaping of Flux Density at the Air Gap of Small DC Motors with Different Permanent-Magnet Poles

1995

Design, operation and reliability of permanent-magnet DC micromotors are highly dependent of the magnet employed, i.e. of its demagnetization curve, type of magnetization (either radial or tangential), size and position within the micromotor as well as of its shape.

Mutation spectrum of NF1 gene in Italian patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 using Ion Torrent PGM™ platform

2017

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is caused by mutations of the NF1 gene and is one of the most common human autosomal dominant disorders. The patient shows different signs on the skin and other organs from early childhood. The best known are six or more café au lait spots, axillary or inguinal freckling, increased risk of developing benign nerve sheath tumours and plexiform neurofibromas. Mutation detection is complex, due to the large gene size, the large variety of mutations and the presence of pseudogenes. Using Ion Torrent PGM™ Platform, 73 mutations were identified in 79 NF1 Italian patients, 51% of which turned out to be novel mutations. Pathogenic status of each variant was classifi…

Low-level laser therapy and anesthetic infiltration for orofacial pain in patients with fibromyalgia : a randomized clinical trial

2018

Background To compare the analgesic effect of anesthetic infiltration of lidocaine 2% and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) by GaAlAs into tender points of patients with orofacial pain and fibromyalgia (FM). Material and Methods A randomized clinical trial was performed with adults (N=66) that were allocated into two groups (1:1): Group A received LLLT irradiation by Diode Laser GaAlAs (780nm) with expositions twice a week during six weeks and Group B was treated with anesthetic infiltration of lidocaine 2% without vasoconstrictor once a week for four weeks. The pain assessment included the Visual Analogic Scale (VAS) and tenderness to palpation. Results No dropout and adverse effect was obser…

Endoluminal sclerosis with diode laser in the treatment of orofacial venous malformations

2012

Introduction: The appearance of vascular anomalies in the orofacial area is a common condition, which represents about 50% of these malformations. Traditional treatment approach, such as surgery and chemical sclerosis has been given way to a few less-invasive options, as the use of the 810nm diode laser to induce the sclerosis of the venous malformation by intralesional photocoagulation. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of the diode laser in the intralesional treatment of the orofacial venous malformations (OFVM), describing the recommended surgical approach, as well as to report the main associated complications. Patients and Methods: 10 cases of OFVM, …

The Amorphous Semiconductor Schottky Barrier Approach to Study the Electronic Properties of Anodic Films on Ti

2017

A detailed study of the electronic properties of thin (>20 nm) anodic TiO2 potentiostatically grown on titanium in two different solutions is presented. The results show that the nature of the anodizing solution affects the electronic properties of the anodic film and, more specifically, the density of electronic states (DOS) distribution. Different DOS were derived from the experimental data analyzed according to the theory of amorphous semiconductor (a-SC) Schottky barrier. It is shown that the usual non-linear and frequency dependent Mott-Schottky plots are in agreement with expected theoretical behavior of a-SC Schottky barrier.

Thiophene pyrenyl derivatives for the supramolecular processability of single-walled carbon nanotubes in thin film heterojunction

2017

Abstract A major problem for the use of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in electronic devices relates to their poor processability. Chemical modification inevitably introduces defects in the nanotube lattice, resulting in a loss of electronic properties. In this contest, we report on a supramolecular approach with the aim of increasing the dispersion of SWCNTs in solution and in organic semiconductor matrices by ensuring the optoelectronic properties. In particular, new pyrenyl derivatives of thiophene have been synthesized and used to improve the solubility of SWCNTs for electron transfer in thin film heterojunction with poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as donor system. Photoinduced ele…

Giant Spin Seebeck Effect through an Interface Organic Semiconductor

2019

Interfacing an organic semiconductor C60 with a non-magnetic metallic thin film (Cu or Pt) has created a novel heterostructure that is ferromagnetic at ambient temperature, while its interface with a magnetic metal (Fe or Co) can tune the anisotropic magnetic surface property of the material. Here, we demonstrate that sandwiching C60 in between a magnetic insulator (Y3Fe5O12: YIG) and a non-magnetic, strong spin-orbit metal (Pt) promotes highly efficient spin current transport via the thermally driven spin Seebeck effect (SSE). Experiments and first principles calculations consistently show that the presence of C60 reduces significantly the conductivity mismatch between YIG and Pt and the s…
