Analysis of the membrane potential of rat- and mouse-liver mitochondria by flow cytometry and possible applications.

Washed and purified rat- or mouse-liver mitochondria exhibiting high membrane integrity and metabolic activity were studied by flow cytometry. The electrophoretic accumulation/redistribution of cationic lipophilic probes, rhodamine 123, safranine O and a cyanine derivative, 3,3'-dihexyloxadicarbocyanine iodide, during the energization process was studied and was consistent with the generation of a negative internal membrane potential. An exception to this was nonylacridine orange which spontaneously bound to the mitochondrial membrane by hydrophobic interactions via its hydrocarbon chain. Identifying the properties of correlations in the firing of neocortical neurons is central to our understanding of cortical information processing. It has been generally assumed, by virtue of the columnar organization of the neocortex, that the firing of neurons residing in a certain vertical domain is highly correlated. Objectives: Copeptin and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (HS-cTn) assays improve the early detection of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Their sensitivities may, however, be reduced in very early presenters.Setting: We performed a post hoc analysis of three prospective studies that included patients who presented to the emergency department for chest pain onset (CPO) of less than 6 hours.Participants: 449 patients were included, in whom 12% had NSTEMI. CPO occurred 4 hours in 146 patients. Locality-Sensitive Hashing for Massive String-Based Ontology Matching

This paper reports initial research results related to the use of locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) for string-based matching of big ontologies. Two ways of transforming the matching problem into a LSH problem are proposed and experimental results are reported. The performed experiments show that using LSH for ontology matching could lead to a very fast matching process. The quality of the alignment achieved in these experiments is comparable to state-of-the-art matchers, but much faster. Further research is needed to find out whether the use of different metrics or specific hardware would improve the results. peerReviewed

Xyloglucan is a natural polysaccharide having a cellulose-like backbone and hydroxyl groups-rich side-chains. In its native form the polymer is water-soluble and forms gel only in presence of selected co-solutes. When a given fraction of galactosyl residues are removed by enzymatic reaction, the polymer acquires the ability to form a gel in aqueous solution at physiological temperatures, a property of great interest for biomedical/pharmaceutical applications.
