On the numerical solution of axisymmetric domain optimization problems by dual finite element method

Shape optimization of an axisymmetric three-dimensional domain with an elliptic boundary value state problem is solved. Since the cost functional is given in terms of the cogradient of the solution, a dual finite element method based on the minimum of complementary energy principle is used. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract We discuss several approaches involving the reconstruction of discontinuous one-dimensional functions using parameter-dependent multiquadric radial basis function (MQ-RBF) local interpolants combined with weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) techniques, both in the computation of the locally optimized shape parameter and in the combination of RBF interpolants. We examine the accuracy of the proposed reconstruction techniques in smooth regions and their ability to avoid Gibbs phenomena close to discontinuities. A sensor device for noninvasive detection and analysis of the pulsating blood flow waveforms by means of the reflective single-period photoplethysmorgraphy (SPPPG) technique has been designed and clinically tested. The sensor is operated jointly with any standard PC, by connecting the sensor head to the AD-card and using a separate hard disc with the signal processing software; all circuits are fed by the PC power supply. Existence for shape optimization problems in arbitrary dimension

We discuss some existence results for optimal design problems governed by second order elliptic equations with the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions or with the interior transmission conditions. We show that our continuity hypotheses for the unknown boundaries yield the compactness of the associated characteristic functions, which, in turn, guarantees convergence of any minimizing sequences for the first problem. In the second case, weaker assumptions of measurability type are shown to be sufficient for the existence of the optimal material distribution. We impose no restriction on the dimension of the underlying Euclidean space.

Weibull Prediction Limits for a Future Number of Failures Under Parametric Uncertainty

In this paper, we present an accurate procedure, called “within-sample prediction of order statistics,” to obtain prediction limits for the number of failures that will be observed in a future inspection of a sample of units, based only on the results of the first in-service inspection of the same sample. The failure-time of such units is modeled with a two-parameter Weibull distribution indexed by scale and shape parameters β and δ, respectively. It will be noted that in the literature only the case is considered when the scale parameter β is unknown, but the shape parameter δ is known.
