Population Structure and Habitat Selection by Anisakis simplex in 4 Odontocete Species from Northern Argentina

2003

We described the population structure and habitat selection of Anisakis simplex in 46 franciscanas, Pontoporia blainvillei, 8 Burmeister's porpoises, Phocoena spinnipinis, 2 Dusky dolphins, Lagenorhynchus ob- scurus, and 2 common dolphins, Delphinus delphis, caught incidentally in the coastal fisheries of northern Argentina. Prevalence ranged from 50% to 100%, but mean intensities were low (1.0-3.6), suggesting that A. simplex has low recruitment rates to coastal dolphins in this area. Adult nematodes were found exclusively in the main stomach of 64.5% of franciscanas (the first stomach of this species) and the forestomach of 50% of Burmeister's porpoises and Dusky dolphins. Other developme…

Pityriasis lichenoides chronica associated with herpes simplex virus type 2.

2012

Introduction. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare, acquired spectrum of skin conditions of an unknown etiology.Case Report. A 28-year-old man presented with recurrent outbreaks of herpes simplex virus associated with the onset of red-to-brown maculopapules located predominantly in trunk in each recurrence. Positive serologies to herpes simplex virus type 2 were detected. Histopathological examination of one of the lesions was consistent with a diagnosis of pityriasis lichenoides chronica.Discussion. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare cutaneous entity of an unknown cause which includes different clinical presentations. A number of infectious agents have been implicated based on the clustering of …

Airy-function approach to binary black hole merger waveforms: The fold-caustic diffraction model

2022

From numerical simulations of the Einstein equations, and also from gravitational wave observations, the gravitational wave signal from a binary black hole merger is seen to be simple and to possess certain universal features. The simplicity is somewhat surprising given that non-linearities of general relativity are thought to play an important role at the merger. The universal features include an increasing amplitude as we approach the merger, where transition from an oscillatory to a damped regime occurs in a pattern apparently oblivious to the initial conditions. We propose an Airy-function pattern to model the binary black hole (BBH) merger waveform, focusing on accounting for its simpl…

Inhibition of the herpes simplex virus-coded thymidine kinase-complex by 9-?-D-arabinofuranosyladenine 5?-monophosphate (ara-AMP) and 9-(2-hydroxyeth…

1984

The thymidine kinase-complex isolated from herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) is associated with the following enzyme activities: ATP:dThd (dCyd) deoxypyrimidine kinase, ATP:dTMP thymidylate kinase, ADP:dThd- and AMP:dThd5′-phosphotransferase. In kinetic experiments it is shown that ara-AMP inhibits AMP:dThd- and ADP:dThd phosphotransferase activity, while acyclo-GMP impairs ADP:dThd phosphotransferase reaction only; the inhibition was found to be non-compertitive. The functional subunit ATP:dThd kinase was not affected by either compound.

Deoxyribonucleases in Herpes simplex Virus Type 1 and 2 Infected Primary Rabbit Kidney Cells

1980

Abstract In primary rabbit kidney cells infected with herpes simplex virus four different neutral deoxyribonuclease activities can be detected by means of the deoxyribonuclease assay in DNA-containing polyacrylamide gels following their separation by discelectrophoresis. The method is suitable to follow independently the change in each activity of the different enzymes using only about 5 × 105 cells for each assay during the time-course of infection. Under these conditions one enzyme activity is constant, two disappear while the activity of a fourth one present only in infected cells, increases.

Inhibition of herpesvirus DNA synthesis by 9-beta-D-arabinofuranosyladenine in cellular and cell-free systems.

1977

9-beta-D-Arabinofuranosyladenine 5'-triphosphate (ara-ATP) is an inhibitor both of DNA polymerase-alpha and -beta from noninfected rabbit kidney cells and of the DNA-dependent DNA polymerase induced by herpes simplex virus Type 1 (strain IES). The studies were performed with partially purified enzymes, and each of the different polymerase preparations contained only one DNA-dependent DNA polymerase species. These enzymes were inhibited in a competitive manner. The HSV-induced DNA-dependent DNA polymerase was 39-fold more sensitive to ara-ATP than was cellular DNA polymerase-beta and 116-fold more sensitive than cellular DNA polymerase-alpha. The affinity of the HSV-induced enzyme for ara-AT…

Phenotypic tradeoffs between egg number and egg size in three parasitic anisakid nematodes

2007

Phenotypic tradeoffs between number and size of eggs were tested in three component populations of three marine anisakid nematodes: Anisakis simplex, Pseudoterranova decipiens and Contracaecum osculatum. Body and uterine volumes (as proxies of female size), and egg number, mean egg volume and clutch volume (as descriptors of reproductive output) were measured in 50 females of each species. Evidence of a phenotypic tradeoff was detected only in A. simplex; the first time that has been found in a parasite population. Comparison of feasible values inferred from the van Noordwijk and de Jong's model and current data showed that interindividual variation in egg size was narrower than expected in…

Nuclear calcium signaling by inositol trisphosphate in GH3 pituitary cells

2008

It has been proposed that nuclear and cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]N and [Ca2+]C) may be regulated independently. We address here the issue of whether inositol trisphosphate (IP3) can, bypassing changes of [Ca2+]C, produce direct release of Ca2+ into the nucleoplasm. We have used targeted aequorins to selectively measure and compare the changes in [Ca2+]C and [Ca2+]N induced by IP3 in GH3 pituitary cells. Heparin, an IP3 inhibitor that does not permeate the nuclear pores, abolished the [Ca2+]C peaks but inhibited only partly the [Ca2+]N peaks. The permeant inhibitor 2-aminoethoxy-diphenyl-borate (2-APB) blocked both responses. Removal of ATP also inhibited more strongly the [Ca2+]C than [Ca2+]N pe…

Virus-nucleus interactions in late herpesvirus infection

2017

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) on alfaherpesviruksiin kuuluva vaipallinen, kaksijuosteista DNA:ta sisältävä virus. Kosketus- ja pisaratartuntana herkästi leviävä HSV-1 on maailmanlaajuisesti huomattava taudinaiheuttaja, sillä virusta kantaa arviolta 67 % väestöstä. Tartunta on elinikäinen. Latentissa vaiheessa HSV-1:n genomi säilyy aistihermojen hermosolmukkeissa. Viruksen aktivoituminen lyyttiseen lisääntymiskiertoon oireilee tyypillisesti rakkuloina kasvojen iholla ja limakalvoilla. HSV-1:n genomin replikoituminen ja uusien viruskapsidien muodostuminen tapahtuvat isäntäsolun tumassa, jossa viruksen rakentumisalue laajenee infektion edetessä. Samalla isäntäsolun kromatiini tiivistyy ja pak…
