A cross-sectional study was conducted in order to assess possible health effects of occupational exposure to AS in workers recruited from western Sicily fisheries sector. Background: Recurrences of herpes labialis (RHL) may be triggered by systemic factors, including stress, menses, and fever. Local stimuli, such as lip injury or sunlight exposure are also associated to RHL. Dental extraction has also been reported as triggering event. Case reports: Seven otherwise healthy patients are presented with severe and extensive RHL occurring about 2-3 days after dental extraction under local anaesthesia. Aciclovir (CAS 59277-89-3) is frequently used in herpes simplex virus diseases, but administration to lactating women occurs only rarely. Therefore, information about the pharmacokinetics of aciclovir in human breast milk is limited. The concentration in breast milk is 2 to 3 fold increased compared to plasma. The reason for this increase is unknown until now. An active transport mechanism has been assumed. Combined therapy with acyclovir and adenosine arabinoside in herpes simplex encephalitis.

We report a case of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) with initial coma and severe left-sided hemiparesis in which combined treatment with adenine arabinoside and acyclovir was followed by complete recovery. This favorable result is discussed in view of the literature of HSE treatment including experimental studies on antiviral activity of both drugs. Combined treatment may be useful in severe cases of HSE.

The factors influencing the interaction of herpes simplex virus (HSV) glycoprotein C (gC) with the third component of complement (C3) were investigated in this study. The ability of gC of HSV type 1 (gC-1) to bind to the C3b fragment of C3 was found to be influenced by cell specific processing of gC-1 in a different manner, binding being remarkably enhanced in some cell lines following removal of sialic acid residues. Testing several intertypic recombinants of HSV we found that only strains expressing gC-1 exhibited binding to C3b, even though their genome consisted mainly of HSV-2 sequences in some recombinants. Synthesis and biological evaluation of pyridinebetaine A and B

The synthesis of the marine natural products pyridinebetaine A and B is reported. The biological evaluation of pyridinebetaine A and B and several analogues as cytotoxic, antifungal and antiviral agents is also described. Unfortunately, none of the compounds tested showed relevant antifungal or cytotoxic activity. Only pyridinebetaine B reduced the Herpes simplex virus type 1 virus replication, though only weakly.
Protein-protein interaction network querying by a "focus and zoom" approach

We propose an approach to network querying in protein-protein interaction networks based on bipartite graph weighted matching. An algorithm is presented that first “focuses” the potentially relevant portion of the target graph by performing a global alignment of this one with the query graph, and then “zooms” on the actual matching nodes by considering their topological arrangement, hereby obtaining a (possibly) approximated occurrence of the query graph within the target graph.
