Cryo-EM structure of ssDNA bacteriophage ΦCjT23 provides insight into early virus evolution.
2022
AbstractThe origin of viruses remains an open question. While lack of detectable sequence similarity hampers the analysis of distantly related viruses, structural biology investigations of conserved capsid protein structures facilitate the study of distant evolutionary relationships. Here we characterize the lipid-containing ssDNA temperate bacteriophage ΦCjT23, which infects Flavobacterium sp. (Bacteroidetes). We report ΦCjT23-like sequences in the genome of strains belonging to several Flavobacterium species. The virion structure determined by cryogenic electron microscopy reveals similarities to members of the viral kingdom Bamfordvirae that currently consists solely of dsDNA viruses wit…
Intrinsic nanostructures on the (001) surface of strontium titanate at low temperatures
2020
Atomically smooth (001) surfaces of SrTiO3 cut from the high-quality single crystals at two different miscut angles 0.9 and 7.0 deg between the real flat surfaces and crystallographic planes (001) were analyzed by means of the reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) method from the room down to liquid helium temperatures. The diffraction patterns typical of the RHEED geometry close to ideal for a small miscut angle and those exhibiting distinct features of the specific periodicity associated with regular steps, which form due to the larger miscut angle, are presented. The surface symmetry and energetics were shown to impose differences in lattice parameters in parallel to a surf…
Resistive communications based on neuristors
2017
Memristors are passive elements that allow us to store information using a single element per bit. However, this is not the only utility of the memristor. Considering the physical chemical structure of the element used, the memristor can function at the same time as memory and as a communication unit. This paper presents a new approach to the use of the memristor and develops the concept of resistive communication.
Luminescence of divalent lanthanide doped BaBrI single crystal under synchrotron radiation excitations
2020
Abstract Luminescence excitation spectra of BaBrI single crystals doped by divalent lanthanide ions are studied using synchrotron radiation excitations from the MAX IV 1.5 GeV storage ring. The energy of the edge and the formation of core cation exciton as well as the energy threshold of the multiplications of electronic excitations is found. It was clearly established the energy transfer from intrinsic luminescence centers to Sm2+ and Eu2+ ions.
Anomalies of dielectric properties and conductivity in single domain LiNbO3:Zn crystals
2016
ABSTRACTA study of the temperature dependence of dielectric constant, conductivity, and piezoelectric modulus in the single-domain state of LiNbO3 crystals modified by Zn admixture at threshold concentration is reported. Unipolarity of the LiNbO3:Zn crystals is observed to increase after treatment of brand-new samples by high-temperature electro-diffusion annealing and by subsequent high-temperature annealing of short-circuited samples. The observed effects are explained as a result of meta-stable residual domains collapsing at high temperature the collapse being assisted by disintegration of charged clusters stabilizing domain walls. The rise of unipolarity is accompanied by anomalies on t…
Influence of magnetization on the applied magnetic field in various AMR regenerators
2017
International audience; The aim of this work is to assess the influence of a magnetic sample on the applied magnetic field inside the air gap of a magnetic circuit. Different magnetic sources including an electromagnet, a permanent magnet in a soft ferromagnetic toroidal yoke, as well as 2D and 3D Halbach cylinders are considered, using a numerical model. Gadolinium is chosen as magnetic material for the sample, due to its strong magnetocaloric properties and its wide use in magnetic refrigeration prototypes. We find that using uniform theoretical demagnetizing factors for cylinders or spheres results in a deviation of less than 2% in the calculation of internal magnetic fields at temperatu…
Morphological and magnetic analysis of Fe nanostructures on W(110) by using scanning tunneling microscopy and Lorentz microscopy
2016
Abstract We investigated morphological features and magnetic properties of epitaxial Fe nanostructures (films, stripes and nanoparticles) on a W(110) surface with monoatomic steps preferentially along the direction. The nanostructures were prepared in ultra-high vacuum by using electron-beam evaporation and subsequent annealing at different temperatures. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements in-situ revealed elongated Fe nanostructures with aspect ratios of up to . The observable shape and orientation (along or perpendicular to the monoatomic steps of the substrate) of the nanostructures depended substantially on the preparation parameters. By capping the system with 7 monolayers of Pt…
Low-temperature luminescence of catangasite single crystals under excitation by vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation
2020
The luminescent properties of Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 (CTGS, catangasite) single crystals have been studied by means of the vacuum ultraviolet excitation spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation from 1.5 GeV storage ring of MAX IV synchrotron facility. Two emission bands at 320 nm (3.87 eV) and 445 nm (2.78 eV) have been detected. Examining excitation spectra in vacuum ultraviolet spectral range, the 320 nm emission band was explained as the emission band of self-trapped exciton in CTGS single crystal. Its atomic structure is discussed. It is also proposed that the 445 nm (2.78 eV) emission in the CTGS is due to the F centers, which have shown a well-resolved excitation (absorption) band at 5.1 …
Comparative study of the luminescence properties of macro- and nanocrystalline MgO using synchrotron radiation
2013
MgO nano-powder with an average crystallite size of nanoparticles ranging 10-15 nm was synthesized using the extractive-pyrolytic method and was studied by room temperature VUV spectroscopy under synchrotron radiation excitation. Comparative analysis of their luminescent properties with that of mac- rocrystalline powder analogues and an MgO single crystal, grown by the arc-fusion method, has been per- formed under excitation by pulsed VUV synchrotron radiation. Special attention was paid to VUV spectral range, which is not reachable with commonly used lamp and laser sources. A considerable blue shift of about 0.3 eV in the excitation spectra of 2.95 eV emission band, was revealed in nanocry…
Shallow and deep trap levels in X-ray irradiated β-Ga2O3: Mg
2019
Abstract The results of the investigation of thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) and photoconductivity (PC) of the X-ray irradiated undoped and Mg2+ doped β-Ga2O3 single crystals are presented. Three low-temperature peaks at 116 K, 147 K and 165 K are observed on the TSL glow curves of undoped crystals. The high-temperature TSL peaks at 354 K and 385 K are dominant in Mg2+ doped crystals. The correlation between doping with Mg2+ ions and the local energy levels of the intrinsic structural defects of β-Ga2O3, which are responsible for the TSL peaks and PC, is established. The nature of TSL peaks and the appropriate photoconductivity excitation bands are discussed.
