E-mail, Facebook, and Mobile Phones as Essential Tools for Lower Secondary School Students’ Communication

2014

The process of communication in the contemporary world and classroom has changed due to the Internet becoming more popular as an important means of exchanging information among young people. The Internet has also influenced relations and modes of communication between students and teachers. In consequence, the social distance between teachers and students has shortened and their relations have become less strict and formal. The following study concerns teacher–student, student–student classroom practices in lower secondary school, and addresses the issue of students’ preferences in communication and teacher–student communication satisfaction. The participants were 16-year-olds from two vill…

Small world theory and the World Wide Web: linking small world properties and website centrality

2016

This qualitative paper aims to point out the incidence of small world characteristics in the World Wide Web. To this end, some theoretical implications of small world theory (SWT) are verified using information from focus groups and in-depth interviews administered to experts and users of the World Wide Web. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether it is possible to apply small world properties to online social networks while pointing out the key variables of website centrality in that context. Building on this, the paper traces possible contributions for better management of the World Wide Web in terms of the professional use of social media to facilitate information or product …

2017

Social media has become an important tool for sport organisations to interact with fans. In particular for sports that have smaller marketing budgets and that do not receive mainstream media coverage on a daily basis, social media platforms provide unique communication and marketing opportunities to overcome such challenges. This study investigates the motives of fans to communicate on the Facebook page of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). It is the first study that focuses on the use of social media in the context of an international sport federation. Knowledge about the gratifications sought by fans while interacting on social media is important for organisations to develo…

Using human-values as a guide for understanding worthy design directions in augmented reality

2016

Augmented reality is a fast developing field, which will no doubt gain strong footing in the area of social media in the near future. Recently, Google Glass placed AR towards the top of the technological hype curve in regards to interaction possibilities, information overlay, information search and recording. Questions still remain however, regarding the added-value that AR offers to already existing interaction modes and technologies. In this study four concepts were designed and tested via video scenarios. The concepts related to three main product categories: educational tools; information presentation; and x-ray vision. The results positively reflected on the application of AR for educa…

Finnish students' uses of and attitudes towards English on Facebook

2013

Superdiversity perspective and the sociolinguistics of social media

2018

This chapter shows how the superdiversity perspective suggested in recent critical sociolinguistics provides the study of social media discourse and communication with a useful approach to conceptualizing and empirically investigating complex and multiple axes of diversity and difference in social media practices. It discusses recent work in sociolinguistics of social media, highlighting how social media practices illustrate many of the aspects of contemporary social life and communication that are considered symptomatic of superdiversity. It shows how research in this field has moved from viewing superdiversity as a quality or quantity characterizing specific places, spaces, groups and net…

Dove finisce il mondo

2015

Dove finisce il mondo offers the first Italian translation of two cpmparatively recent stories by Bernardine Evaristo, the unpublished On Top of the World (2006) and I'm Think I'm Going Slightly Mad (I think I'm slightly crazy, 2011) and, in the appendix, the translation of her theoretical essay CSI Europe (2008), which refers to the thematic issues that affect the writer's stories and pervade her entire narrative production. The stories, in investigating contemporary forms of female distress, outline the extreme journeys of the protagonists in search of an identity free from gender and ethnic-racial conditioning: one in the Arctic lands whose whiteness becomes the scene of a potential suic…

Literature, social media and questionnaire surveys identify relevant conservation areas for Carcharhinus species in the Mediterranean Sea

2023

Sharks support ecosystems’ health, but their populations are facing severe declines worldwide. Knowledge gaps on shark distribution and the negative human perception of them still represent a barrier to the implementation of effective conservation measures. Here we carried out a regional-scale analysis in the Mediterranean Sea using data on requiem shark catches and sightings available in the scientific literature and on social media platforms to: 1) depict the distribution of Carcharhinus species across the basin, 2) identify potentially relevant areas for their conservation, and 3) evaluate people’s attitude toward shark protection. In addition, we administered 112 questionnaires in one o…
