A probabilistic condensed representation of data for stream mining

2014

Data mining and machine learning algorithms usually operate directly on the data. However, if the data is not available at once or consists of billions of instances, these algorithms easily become infeasible with respect to memory and run-time concerns. As a solution to this problem, we propose a framework, called MiDEO (Mining Density Estimates inferred Online), in which algorithms are designed to operate on a condensed representation of the data. In particular, we propose to use density estimates, which are able to represent billions of instances in a compact form and can be updated when new instances arrive. As an example for an algorithm that operates on density estimates, we consider t…

Creation of a food taste database using an in-home "taste" profile method

2014

International audience; The purpose of this study was to create a food 'taste' database using an innovative in-home profile method. The five basic tastes and fat sensation were studied. The proposed method consisted in an intensive training in laboratory (55 h, 5 months) immediately followed by an in-home measurements phase (8 months) during which 12 trained panelists had to evaluate the five tastes and fat sensation of the foods they typically consumed. The rating scales were inspired by scales used in the Spectrum (TM) method. During the in-home measurement phase, ratings were reported thanks to a web-based tool and each month the panelists returned to the laboratory for a 2-h retraining …

The Innervation of Taste Buds in the Soft Palate and Circumvallate Papilla of the Rat as Revealed by the Zinc Iodide-Osmium Tetroxide Technique.

1998

The taste buds in the soft palate and the circumvallate papillae of the rat were investigated by the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide technique. In addition, electron micrographs of taste buds stained with this method were presented for the first time. Differences in taste bud structures were found between the examined regions. The taste buds of the soft palate showed a complicated plexus of intragemmal nerve fibers. Some fibers exhibited terminal polymorphic swellings. Single branches could be traced close to the space of the taste pore. In the soft palate, the taste bud cells remained unstained, whereas in the circumvallate papillae of the tongue, a subpopulation of taste bud cells could be s…

Student teachers’ types of probing questions in inquiry-based mathematics teaching with and without GeoGebra

2017

Previous studies have produced several typologies of teacher questions in mathematics. Probing questions that ask students to explain are often included in the types of questions. However, only rare studies have created subtypes for probing questions or investigated how questioning differs depending on whether technology is used or not. The aims of this study are to elaborate on different ways of asking students to give explanations in inquiry-based mathematics teaching and to investigate whether questioning in GeoGebra lessons differs from questioning in other lessons. Data was collected by video recording 29 Finnish mathematics student teachers’ lessons in secondary and upper secondary sc…

Empowering team leadership and safety performance in nuclear power plants: A multilevel approach

2013

Abstract Despite the large body of work on team leadership, hardly any literature has dealt with team leadership in safety performance settings. The goal of the present study is to analyze how team leader behaviors influence team members’ safety performance in nuclear power plants. For this purpose, an empowering leadership approach was assessed. We consider a multilevel model in which safety performance is divided into three types of behaviors. The sample was composed of 479 workers in 54 groups from two Spanish nuclear power plants. The results suggested that leaders’ empowering behaviors generated higher safety compliance behaviors and higher safety participation behaviors by team member…

The effects of virtuality level on task-related collaborative behaviors: The mediating role of team trust

2013

This study aims to analyze the mediating role of team trust in the relationship between virtuality level and task-related collaborative behaviors. Three types of task-related collaborative behaviors were studied, namely team coordination, team cooperation, and team information exchange. Drawing upon theory and research on virtual teams and trust, we hypothesized that team trust partially mediated the effects of virtuality level on team coordination, team cooperation, and team information exchange. A laboratory experiment was carried out with 65 four-person teams randomly assigned to three communication media with different virtuality levels (face-to-face, video conference and computer-media…

Relationship, task and process conflicts on team performance

2009

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine which communication contexts – virtual or traditional interactions – is more disruptive or beneficial to the effects of intragroup conflicts on team performance.Design/methodology/approachA laboratory experiment was conducted comparing 22 face‐to‐face (FTF) teams, 22 videoconference (VC) teams and 22 computer‐mediated communication (CMC) teams over a month.FindingsResults showed that VC teams are the highest performing teams and CMC teams the lowest. However, when task conflict increases VC team performance diminishes at the first stage of the teamwork. FTF team performance is also improved by task conflict, but also by process conflict. After …

Exploring the experiences concerning leadership communication in online gaming groups

2009

This paper looks at leadership communication in the context of multiplayer computer games and the groups that operate within them. In multiplayer games promoting teamwork and long-term cooperation, issues of management and leadership are prevalent. The paper explores the experiences that members of multiplayer communities have towards leadership communication in multiplayer games by looking at one specific case of organized team play within the framework of a turn-based online strategy game. The data utilized in this study consists of themed player interviews conducted via e-mail. The analysis proposes three central dimensions that emerged from the data. These were labeled: 1) the leader as…

Implementation of TICs for the Virtual Learning of Literary Subjects: From Aula Virtual to OCW and Universia

2016

Within the current European Convergence Process and the development of the new University degrees, a compromise has been reached to adapt the English Studies (before English Philology) curricula to the current needs of students in a highly competitive society. The final goal is to transform our education system into one of learning. This actually implies that the student must engage himself more closely with the university and that he may lead his coursework in a more autonomous way, backed up by more active educational strategies, such as the personalised tutoring guide, the use of the new technologies, and the team work.
