ChemInform Abstract: Sol-Gel Entrapped Chromium(VI): A New Selective, Efficient and Recyclable Oxidizing System.

2010

Abstract The sol-gel entrapment of chromium(VI) within a silica matrix, obtained by oxidation with ozone of the corresponding entrapped chromium(III), was found to be an efficient and recyclable oxidizing system (at least up to 16 times) for benzylic alcohols. No leaching of chromium in solution was observed, which prevented any environmental pollution.

Optical properties and photosensitivity of vacuum synthesized Ge-doped sol-gel amorphous SiO/sub 2/

2005

We report optical and electron paramagnetic resonance investigations of gamma ray irradiation effects in sol-gel Ge-doped amorphous SiO/sub 2/. The studied materials have Ge-doping levels up to 10/sup 4/ molar part per million and were densified by two routes differing for the atmosphere: O/sub 2/+N/sub 2/ or vacuum. The obtained results evidence that irradiation affects matrix sites inducing paramagnetic defects. Furthermore, the comparison between the two densification procedures shows that vacuum atmosphere induces higher radiation sensitivity.

Synthesis of oxide-supported vanadium catalysts and their activity in ethylene polymerization

1999

The activity of oxide-supported vanadium-based catalyst systems (VOCl 3/Et 2AlCl) in low-pressure ethylene polymerization and the properties of the resulting polyethylenes were studied in relation to the type and mode of modification of the oxide support. Alumina, silica and an un"conventional silica-type material prepared by the sol-gel process were used as supports. Results are compared with those obtained earlier with a catalyst supported on MgCl 2(THF) 2. Of the oxides studied, the silica-type sol-gel material dehydrated and subsequently modified with Et 2AlCl proved to be the best carrier for a vanadium catalyst. The polyethylene prepared by using this catalyst support was found to exh…

Immobilization of proteins in silica gel: Biochemical and biophysical properties

2015

The development of silica-based sol-gel techniques compatible with the retention of protein structure and function started more than 20 years ago, mainly for the design of biotechnological devices or biomedical applications. Silica gels are optically transparent, exhibit good mechanical stability, are manufactured with different geometries, and are easily separated from the reaction media. Biomolecules encapsulated in silica gel normally retain their structural and functional properties, are stabilized with respect to chemical and physical insults, and can sometimes exhibit enhanced activity in comparison to the soluble form. This review briefly describes the chemistry of protein encapsulat…

Thioflavin-T doped silica nanoparticles by basic-catalyzed sol-gel synthesis

2014

We developed a basic-catalyzed sol-gel procedure that allows to synthesize silica nanoparticles functionalized with Thioflavin-T (ThT). During the synthesis, the formation of the doped silica nanoparticles was monitored by absorbance spectra indicating that the catalyst does not cause the total hydroxylation of the dye. Fluorescence measurements carried out on the ThT doped silica nanoparticles proved the attachment of ThT on silica and Raman spectroscopy provided information about the dye structure.

Silica powder obtained by sol-gel method as a support of organometallic vanadium catalyst for ethylene polymerization

2004

Sol-gel technique was employed to obtain the silica-type powder, which after modification procedure was applied as asupport of organometallic catalytic system for ethylene polymerization. The powder product was synthesized using hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS, catalyzed by ammonia. Obtained material and a reference support (commercial silica Davisil) were characterized to determine their particle size distributions, BET surface area, pore volume and diameter. Gas-phase adsorption of vanadium catalyst on analyzed support materials as well as adsorption from the solution in hexane were carried out. Both carrier materials were thermally pretreated prior catalytic systems syntheses and the…
