Sol–Gel Synthesis of Tunable Cerium Titanate Materials

Cerium titanate structures present a high technological interest because of their optical and catalytic properties. This work reports the synthesis of these materials by a sol–gel methodology that allows mixed oxides with TiIV/CeIII, TiIV/CeIV or TiIV/CeIII–CeIV species to be obtained. Crystallization of CeO2–TiO2 mixed oxides and Ce2Ti2O7 pyrochlore phase was corroborated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Magnetic and EPR measurements were performed in order to clarify the oxidation state of the cerium ions in the system as a result of the easy oxidation of CeIII. Abstract High concentrations of Ethyl-[4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenyl]-(2-oxiranylmethoxy-ethyl)-amine (ENPMA) chromophores were linked covalently to two different kinds of SiO 2 matrices prepared by the sol–gel method. The matrices differed in their reticulation level, determined by the organometallic precursor used during the synthesis. The materials were deposited as films by spin-coating. The chromophores in the films were oriented in a non-centrosymmetric way by a modified Corona poling set-up, and the nonresonant second order non-linear optical coefficient d 33 (0) of the films was determined by means of the Maker fringe technique. Phase analysis and oxygen strorage capacity of ceria-lanthana-based TWC promoters prepared by sol-gel routes

Ceria–lanthana-based promoters of three-way catalysts are synthesized by two different sol–gel routes, involving nitrate precursors. The oxygen uptake ability of these compounds is measured by O2 chemisorption. The specific surface area is determined by N2 adsorption (BET). X-ray diffraction data are analyzed by Rietveld refinement, demonstrating that lanthanum forms solid solution with CeO2; its total amount in ceria depends on the competitive formation of La–Al mixed oxides and on the synthetic method. Effect of the Al/Si atomic ratio on surface and structural properties of sol-gel prepared aluminosilicates

Abstract A series of aluminosilicates with an Al/Si ratio ranging from 0 to ∞ (0 for pure silica and ∞ for pure alumina) was prepared by sol–gel process and characterized by surface and structure techniques. Aluminum tri sec butoxide and tetramethylorthosilicate were used as precursors for the sol–gel synthesis. The acidic properties of the oxides were studied by determination of the zero point charges, through mass titration method, and, for selected samples, by FT-IR spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine used as a probe for both Bronsted and Lewis acidity. Ferricytochrome c encapsulated in silica nanoparticles: structural stability and functional properties.

Using a modified sol-gel technique, we have succeeded in encapsulating ferric cytochrome c in silica nanoparticles obtained from hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetramethylorthosilicate. Particles dimensions have been determined with dynamic light scattering; this technique yields an hydrodynamic radius of about 100 nm, each nanoparticle containing about 10(2)-10(3) proteins. If stored in the cold at low ionic strength, nanoparticles are stable for more than one week, even if a slow radius increase with time is observed. Synthesis, characterization and fine-tuning of bimodal poly(organosiloxane) nanoparticles

Abstract The acid catalyzed sol–gel type synthesis of polyorganosiloxane core-shell nanoparticles with removable PDMS core in aqueous dispersion leads to the inherent formation of a bimodal size distribution with smaller spheres having approximately 26 nm radii and larger nanoparticles with 60 nm in radius. The origin of the self-organized bimodality is investigated and finally attributed to a combination of stabilization of the growing particles due to i) a miniemulsion-type stabilization by the ultrahydrophobe PDMS and ii) by surface co-stabilization by the employed surfactant. Abstract ZnO–SnO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile sol–gel synthesis route and characterized through X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area analysis, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was tested using the degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV light as model reaction. Spectroscopic properties of pure and Coumarin 153-doped thin films of sol-gel silica xerogels

Abstract Thin-films doped with Coumarin 153, an important laser dye, have been prepared by the sol-gel method. Spectroscopic properties of the entrapped dye are studied by electronic absorption, diffuse reflectance, electronic excitation, emission and time-resolved emission techniques. The obtained results indicate that the entrapment of the dye results in formation of molecular aggregates having absorption and emission characteristics different from those of the monomeric dye. The blue matrix emission band (at approx. 450 nm) is relatively short-lived while the red band (at approx. 700 nm) displays a very long lifetime. Spectroscopic studies of 5,5′-dimethoxy-3,3,′-disulfobutyl-9-ethylthiacarbocyanine (DDTC) in solutions and immobilized in sol-gel matrices

Abstract Absorption spectra of 5,5′-dimethoxy-3,3,′-disulfobutyl-9-ethylthiacarbocyanine (DDTC) in aqueous solutions and immobilized in xerogels prepared by the sol-gel method were obtained. Influence of pH, detergent (Triton X-100), ethanol addition and sol-gel preparation method on the dye aggregation equilibria and its photostability were investigated. In liquid solutions lowering of pH, as well as addition of the detergent, shift the aggregation equilibrium towards the DDTC monomeric form. However, while more acidic conditions result in a decrease of the dye stability, addition of the detergent has a slightly stabilizing effect on the dye.
