ChemInform Abstract: Inorganic Materials Acting as Heterogeneous Photocatalysts and Catalysts in the Same Reactions

General considerations on the differences and similarities between heterogeneous photocatalysis and thermal catalysis are presented. Some research papers are reviewed where a reaction has been carried out in the presence of an inorganic material used both as catalyst and photocatalyst. The existing literature often compares catalytic reactions undertaken with the contemporaneous presence of radiation, showing only that photocatalytic reactions can occur under milder experimental conditions and at much lower temperatures. Nevertheless, differences in mechanistic aspects, conversions and selectivities between catalytic and photocatalytic reactions should also be highlighted. These are due to …

The synthesis of zeolites from dry powders

Summary ZSM-5 was synthesized by different methods with a gradually decreasing water content ending in a reaction mixture with absolutely dry reagents in form of a powder in the complete absence of a solution phase. Amorphous precursors obtained by drying SiO 2 * Al 2 O 3 gels at 650°C were transformed into zeolites in the presence of dried NH 4 F and TPABr. The reaction products were characterized by XRD, REM, TG/DTA, MAS NMR and Electron Micropobe. Pure ZSM-5 or Silicalite-1 was obtained in all cases. The proposed method includes extraction by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) followed by liquid–liquid partition and purification by solid phase extraction (SPE). Abstract Two approaches based on sorptive extraction, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), in combination with liquid chromatography (LC)–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (MS) have been assayed for analyzing chlorpyriphos methyl, diazinon, fonofos, phenthoate, phosalone, and pirimiphos ethyl in honey. In both, SPME and SBSE, enrichment was performed using a poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating. Three new 1,4-phenylenediacrylate bridged Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes of molecular formulas {[Mn2(ppda)(phen)4(H2O)2](ppda)2(H2O)} (1), {[Co(ppda)- (dpyo)(H2O)3]·4(H2O)}n (2), and {[Co(ppda)(bpe)]·(0.5H2O)}n (3) [ppda = 1,4- phenylenediacrylate; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; dpyo = 4,4′-dipyridyl N,N′-dioxide; bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and low-temperature magnetic measurements. Organic synthesis of high added value molecules with MOF catalysts

Recent examples of organic synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals in confined spaces of MOFs are highlighted and compared with silica-based ordered porous solids, such as zeolites or mesoporous (organo)silica. Red and far-red sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence as a measure of plant photosynthesis

Remote estimation of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by terrestrial vegetation can provide an unparalleled opportunity to track spatiotemporal variations of photosynthetic efficiency. Here we provide the first direct experimental evidence that the two peaks of the chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum can be accurately mapped from high-resolution radiance spectra and that the signal is linked to variations in actual photosynthetic efficiency. Metal film growth on regular and defective MgO(001) surface: A comparative ab initio simulation and thermodynamic study

Abstract In order to understand the difference in metallic film growth modes on perfect and defective oxide substrates, we have combined ab initio B3LYP periodic calculations on the slab models of the corresponding Me/MgO(0 0 1) interfaces (Me = Ag, Cu) with thermodynamic theory of solid solutions. For a defectless magnesia surface, we confirm the experimentally observed submonolayer growth of 3D metallic islands (Ag possesses a higher trend than Cu). BacSr1−cTiO3 perovskite solid solutions: Thermodynamics from ab initio electronic structure calculations

We suggest theoretical prediction for Ba"cSr"1"-"cTiO"3 perovskite solid solutions (BST) combining ab initio DFT/B3PW calculations and alloy thermodynamics. This approach is based on calculations of a series of ordered super-structures in Ba-Sr simple cubic sublattice immersed in the rest TiO"3 matrix. Although these structures are unstable with respect to the decomposition, the results of total energy calculations allow us to extract the necessary energy parameters and to calculate the phase diagram for the solid solutions (alloys). The structure of pumice: An XPS and27Al MAS NMR study

In order to investigate the surface structure of pumice, an amorphous aluminosilicate, samples of pumice and of standards of silica and alumina have been studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effect of a mild acid leaching was also considered. The analysis of the Si 2p, Al 2p and O 1s photoelectron peaks and the Si KLL and O KLL Auger peaks indicated that pumice is formed by tetrahedral silica with some units being replaced by aluminate, AlO2−. The acid treatment decreases the alkali and the aluminate ions. X-ray photoelectron spectra of the valence band of pumices and of standards of Al2O3 and SiO2 agree with the core-level results.
