13C NMR spectra of eudesmanolides I—eudesman-12,6-olides

1987

The 13C NMR spectra of 26 eudesmanolides of natural and synthetic origin have been measured, including the naturally occurring sesquiterpene lactones artemisin, torrentin, rothin-A and rothin-B and several semi-synthetic eudesman-12,6-olides obtained from artemisin. The chemical shift values of the different compounds are compared and the effects of the substituents are discussed.

Temperature and pressure dependence of phase separation of trans-decahydronaphthalene/polystyrene solution

2004

Abstract The cloud-point temperatures (Tcl’s) of trans-decahydronaphthalene (TD)/polystyrene (PS, Mw=270 kg/mol) solutions were determined by light scattering measurements over a range of temperatures (1–16 °C), pressures (100–900 bar), and compositions (4.2–21.6 vol% polymer). The system phase separates upon cooling and the Tcl was found to increase with the rising pressure for the constant composition. In the absence of special effects this finding indicates positive excess volumes. The special attention was paid to the demixing temperatures as a function of the pressure for the different polymer solutions and the plots in the T-volume fraction plane and P-volume fraction plane. The cloud…

Cyclodextrin-assisted Glycan Chain Extension on a Protected Glycosyl Amino Acid

2000

By the use of cyclodextrins, we have enhanced the solubility of the protected amino acid glycan Fmoc-Thr(GalNAcα1)-OtBu (1b) up to 100-fold. This improvement enabled us to carry out an enzymatic glycosylation employing a β-galactosidase in combination with an α2,3-sialyltransferase without the aid of organic cosolvents. After optimization of the one-pot reaction, the sialylated core 1 structure Fmoc-Thr[Neu5Ac(α2-3)Gal(β1-3)GalNAcα1]-OtBu (3b) could be obtained with 50% yield.

Radiation synthesis of polyaspartamide functionalised hydrogels for sustained release of fragrances

2005

The aim of the present investigation is to assess the possibility of obtaining a biocompatible material device which is able to deliver oil-soluble fragrances in air over a length of time. Aqueous solutions of polyaspartamide functionalised with glycidyl methacrylate have been cross linked through gamma irradiation in the presence of a lipophilic model fragrance, emulsified prior to irradiation. Two emulsification conditions have been considered at two different concentrations of both fragrance and surfactant in water. Chemical hydrogels have been obtained in correspondence to two irradiation absorbed doses and have been characterised for their solubility properties and swelling ability in …

Design and evaluation of sensory systems based on amphiphilic anthraquinones molecular receptors

2015

A new paradigm is described that allows one to create different types of sensors: from highly sensitive ones to practical household devices. Our approach relies on modular molecular receptors incorporating an intensely-colored aminoanthraquinone signaling unit equipped with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic modules, the number and size of which being configured in accordance with the targeted analyte and the sought detection method. An important advantage is the compliance with some principles of green chemistry, avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. The proper functionalization of the anthraquinone scaffold afforded water-soluble chromoinophores capable of quantifying selectively Hg2+…

Cytochemical techniques for zinc and heavy metals localization in nerve cells

2002

Zinc is one of the most abundant oligoelements in the living cell. It appears tightly bound to metallothioneins, loosely bound to some metalloproteins and nucleic acids, or even as free ion. Small amounts of zinc ions (in the nanomolar range) regulate a plentitude of enzymatic proteins, receptors, and transcription factors; thus, cells need accurate homeostasis of zinc ions. Some neurons have developed mechanisms to accumulate zinc in specific membrane compartments ("vesicular zinc") which can be revealed using histochemical techniques. This article is a short report on the different direct-indirect experimental approaches for zinc and heavy metal detection in neurons. Substances giving a b…

Sorption of high pressure fluid mixtures into semi-crystalline polymers: investigation of the system carbon dioxide/vinylidenefluoride/poly(vinyliden…

2008

A novel experimental apparatus for measuring gas absorption has been adopted to study sorption of carbon dioxide CO2 and vinylidenefluoride (VDF) in a semi crystalline polymer, namely poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF). The experimental technique allows to calculate simultaneous absorption of different components in the polymer phase, through a gas chromatographic determination of the composition of the fluid phase. To take into account indirectly the polymer swelling, a suitable not-absorbable probe, namely argon, has been added to the fluid phase. Concentrations of molecules absorbed in the polymer phase were simply calculated through mass balance equations written for each component in the …

Dimethoxy aromatic compounds. IV.—determination of stereochemistry of 2,3,6,7-tetraalkoxy-9,10-dihalomethyl-9,10-dihydroanthracenes by13C NMR chemica…

1987

The analysis of the 13C NMR spectra of several 2,3,6,7-tetraalkoxy-9,10-dihalomethyl-9,10-dihydroanthracenes showed a strong dependence of the chemical shift values on the orientation of the halomethyl groups. On this basis it was possible to determine both the configuration (cis or trans) and conformation of the isomers, even if only one isomer was available.
