Cloud detection for CHRIS/Proba hyperspectral images

Accurate and automatic detection of clouds in satellite scenes is a key issue for a wide range of remote sensing applications. With no accurate cloud masking, undetected clouds are one of the most significant source of error in both sea and land cover biophysical parameter retrieval. Sensors with spectral channels beyond 1 um have demonstrated good capabilities to perform cloud masking. This spectral range can not be exploited by recently developed hyperspectral sensors that work in the spectral range between 400- 1000 nm. Studies of CoxMg1-xO Solid Solutions Using Laboratory EXAFS-Spectrometer

Studies of the local electronic structure and the short-range order in solid solutions Co x Mg1-x O with x equal from 0.02 to 1.00 have been carried out on the Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectra measured using the laboratory EXAFS-spectrometer. A non-monotonous change of the Co-O distance in the first coordination shell with the bent at x=0.5 has been established. The second coordination shell of cobalt has been formed by cobalt and magnesium atoms with a distribution close to statistical.

The Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) Mission: From Spectral Measurements to High-Level Science Products

The Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) mission was selected in 2015, by the European Space Agency (ESA), as an Earth Explorer mission, with a launch planned for 2024. The key scientific objective of the mission is the quantitative global mapping of actual photosynthetic activity of terrestrial ecosystems, as a function of variable vegetation health status and environmental stress conditions. The measurements will have a spatial resolution of 300 m, adequate to resolve land surface processes associated to vegetation dynamics at a global scale. Coupled retrieval of aerosol optical thickness, columnar water vapor and surface reflectance maps from ENVISAT/MERIS data over land

An algorithm for the derivation of atmospheric parameters and surface reflectance data from MEdium Resolution Imaging Specrometer Instrument (MERIS) on board ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) images has been developed. Geo-rectified aerosol optical thickness (AOT), columnar water vapor (CWV) and spectral surface reflectance maps are generated from MERIS Level-1b data over land. The algorithm has been implemented so that AOT, CWV and reflectance products are provided on an operational manner, making no use of ancillary parameters apart from those attached to MERIS products. Imaging spectrometers operating in the solar spectrum measure the upwelling reflected solar radiation, and are an important tool in the bio/geochemical characterization of the Earth system. Surface reflectance is usually the starting point for the retrieval of biophysical parameters from remote measurements. Reliable radiometric and spectral calibrations and accurate atmospheric correction are mandatory in the interpretation of the surface reflectance. Reduction of Convective Low-Frequency Noise in Thermal Lens Spectrometry

The construction and optimization of a thermal lens spectrometer with coaxial pump/probe configuration is reported. The low-frequency noise of convective origin is studied in detail, and it is demonstrated that a horizontal slit, instead of a pinhole, can be used as a simple way of reducing the noise to a negligible level without losing sensitivity.

Direct infusion mass spectrometry as a fingerprint of protein-binding media used in works of art

A direct infusion mass spectrometry method for the characterization of proteinaceous glues from binding media used in pictorial works of art prior to conservation or restoration treatment is proposed. Amino acids are released by acid hydrolysis and dissolved in a mixture of acidic water and ethanol. This mixture is directly infused into a mass spectrometer without any derivatization. The mass spectrometer is operated in positive ion electrospray mode (ESI-MS) to yield [M+H]+ ions for the amino acids. Synthesis, Characterization, and Saccharide Binding Studies of Bile Acid − Porphyrin Conjugates

Synthesis and characterization of bile acid-porphyrin conjugates (BAPs) are reported. Binding of saccharides with BAPs in aqueous methanol was studied by monitoring changes in the visible absorption spectral of the porphyrin-moieties. Although these studies clearly showed absorbance changes, suggesting quite high if non-selective binding, the mass spectral studies do not unambiguously support these results.

Surfactant self-assembly in the gas phase: Bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate- alkaline metal ion aggregates

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted for systems in vacuo consisting of n AOT anions (bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate ions) and n 1 or n Na+ ions up to n = 20. For n = 15, positively charged systems with Li+, K+, and Cs+ cations were also considered. All systems were observed to form reverse micelle-like aggregates whose centre is occupied by cations and polar heads in a very compact solid-like way, while globally the aggregate has the form of an elongated and rather flat ellipsoid. The effect of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) on the mononuclear heterocyclic rearrangement of the (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (1) in aqueous borate buffer at pH = 9.6 has been analyzed at temperatures ranging from 293.15 to 313.15 K. The trend of the absorption spectra of 1 as a function of time has been accounted for with the formation of two different 1:1 complexes between beta-CD and 1, the first, "unreactive" complex being formed faster than the "reactive" one.
