Different Dissolution Media Lead to Different Crystal Structures of Talinolol with Impact on Its Dissolution and Solubility
2003
During the performance of dissolution tests with immediate and controlled-release talinolol tablets it was detected that the type of the buffer used as dissolution medium had a strong influence on the solubility and the dissolution behavior of the drug. It was proven that talinolol appeared in different crystal structures with strongly differing solubilities when pure water, acetate, or phosphate buffers were employed as dissolution media. The resulting crystal structures were characterized by means of light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray powder diffraction. All methods were adjuvant to detect changes in talinolol crystal structures. The different solubility and di…

Smart Sustainable Cities of the New Millennium: Towards Design for Nature
2021
AbstractUrban environments consist of a mosaic of natural fragments, planned and unintentional habitats hosting both introduced and spontaneous species. The latter group exploits abandoned and degraded urban niches which, in the case of plants, form what is called thethird landscape. In the Anthropocene, cities, open spaces and buildings must be planned and designed considering not only human needs but also those of other living organisms. The scientific approach of habitat sharing is defined asreconciliation ecology, whilst the action of implementing the ecosystem services and functioning of such anthropogenic habitats is calledUrban Rehabilitation. However, urban development still represe…
City logistics – A Strategic Element of Sustainable Urban Development
2016
Abstract The main purpose of this article is to present the basic development trends in the logistics area of the city, some concept of sustainable logistics and innovative technologies prerequisites to its implementation. The author shows such intelligent technologies as e.g. intelligent traffic control, modular containers, which help to improve utilization of vehicle capacity, and alternative means of transport. This will help to reduce the load on the road infrastructure, thus improving the quality of the environment and life in the city. The main trend in sustainable city logistics is cooperation between suppliers, customers and the public administration. Implementation of intelligent l…
About Objective 3-D Analysis of Airway Geometry in Computerized Tomography
2008
The technology of multislice X-ray computed tomography (MSCT) provides volume data sets with approximately isotropic resolution, which permits a noninvasive 3-D measurement and quantification of airway geometry. In different diseases, like emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or cystic fribrosis, changes in lung parenchyma are associated with an increase in airway wall thickness. In this paper, we describe an objective measuring method of the airway geometry in the 3-D space. The limited spatial resolution of clinical CT scanners in comparison to thin structures like airway walls causes difficulties in the measurement of the density and the thickness of these structures.…
In vitro skin penetration of bronidox, bronopol and formaldehyde from cosmetics
2020
The objective was to evaluate the influence of the formulation in the in vitro transdermal absorption through pig ear skin of three preservatives, bronopol, bronidox and formaldehyde as well as the absorption of formaldehyde from bronopol and dimethyloldimethyl hydantoin (DMDM hydantoin). An aqueous solution, an O/W emulsion and a hydrogel were assayed. Bronidox and bronopol absorption depends on the formulation. The O/W emulsion was the system that least promoted absorption of bronidox while the absorption of bronopol was lower from the hydrogel. The aqueous solution provided maximal transdermal absorption of both preservatives. Moreover, the transdermal absorption of formaldehyde released…
Isolated in-vitro perfusion of pig hearts obtained from the abattoir: an alternative to animal experiments?
1994
Isolated pig hearts (German farm pigs) were characterized after global in-vivo ischaemia as a potential alternative to in-vivo animal studies. Hearts were harvested from adult farm swine at the abattoir 10.3 +/- 2.1 min after incision of the carotid artery. They were immediately perfused and thereafter stored in ice-cold cardioplegic (St Thomas's) solution. After 38 +/- 3 min, retrograde perfusion was started with oxygenated pig blood (37 degrees C; 5000 U Heparin.l-1; pH 7.38 +/- 0.1; 11 mmol glucose.l-1) at a flow rate of 85 ml.min-1 100 g-1 wet weight (gww-1) for 30 min (n = 10). Additionally, shortly after obtaining the hearts, ATP and CP content were measured by enzymatic tests in 10 p…
Transcutol containing vesicles for topical delivery of minoxidil
2010
The aim of this work was to evaluate the ability of Transcutol (Trc) to produce elastic vesicles with soy lecithin (SL) and study the influence of the obtained vesicles on in vitro (trans)dermal delivery of minoxidil. To this purpose, so-called penetration enhancer-containing vesicles (PEVs) were prepared using Trc aqueous solutions (5-10-20-30% v/v) as hydrophilic phase. SL liposomes, without Trc, were used as control. Prepared formulations were characterized in terms of size distribution, morphology, zeta potential, deformability, and rheological behavior. The influence of the obtained PEVs on (trans)dermal delivery of minoxidil was studied by in vitro diffusion experiments through pig sk…
Superresolved digital in-line holographic microscopy for high-resolution lensless biological imaging.
2010
Digital in-line holographic microscopy (DIHM) is a modern approach capable of achieving micron-range lateral and depth resolutions in three-dimensional imaging. DIHM in combination with numerical imaging reconstruction uses an extremely simplified setup while retaining the advantages provided by holography with enhanced capabilities derived from algorithmic digital processing. We introduce superresolved DIHM incoming from time and angular multiplexing of the sample spatial frequency information and yielding in the generation of a synthetic aperture (SA). The SA expands the cutoff frequency of the imaging system, allowing submicron resolutions in both transversal and axial directions. The pr…
Synthetic aperture superresolution with multiple off-axis holograms
2006
An optical setup to achieve superresolution in microscopy using holographic recording is presented. The technique is based on off-axis illumination of the object and a simple optical image processing stage after the imaging system for the interferometric recording process. The superresolution effect can be obtained either in one step by combining a spatial multiplexing process and an incoherent addition of different holograms or it can be implemented sequentially. Each hologram holds the information of each different frequency bandpass of the object spectrum. We have optically implemented the approach for a low-numerical-aperture commercial microscope objective. The system is simple and rob…
