Biphasic ethylene polymerisation using 1-n-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroaluminate ionic liquid as a medium of the Cp2TiCl2 titanocene catalyst
2008
Abstract A systematic analysis was performed on a series of 1- n -alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroaluminates (where alkyl = ethyl, butyl, hexyl, and octyl), applied as a medium of the Cp 2 TiCl 2 titanocene catalyst, to evaluate the influence of the physical properties of the ionic liquids on the polymerisation reaction carried out in the biphasic ionic liquid/hexane mode. Two alkylaluminium compounds, AlEtCl 2 and AlEt 2 Cl, were used as activators. The influence of the activator/catalyst molar ratio on the performance of the ethylene polymerisation was determined for each ionic liquid studied. The best results were obtained using 1- n -octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroaluminate. …
Metal-free anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate in tetrahydrofuran using bis(triphenylphosphoranilydene)ammonium (PNP+) as counterion
2000
Bis(triphenylphosphoranilydene)ammonium (PNP + ) triphenylmethanide (Ph 3 C - ) is a new metal-free initiator for the living polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The kinetics of the polymerization strongly depend on the metal counterion the initiator precursor. When the initiator is made from the metathesis reaction of Ph 3 CK and PNPCl, the polymerization follows first-order kinetics up to 0°C with half-lives below 0.1 s. The propagation rate constants are much higher than those obtained with tetraphenylphosphonium (TPP + ) cations, indicating a smaller fraction of dormant ylides. When the initiator is synthesized from Ph 3 CLi, polymerization proceeds much slower and molecular wei…
Anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate using tetrakis[tris(dimethylamino)phosphoranylidenamino] phosphonium (P5+) as counterion in tetrahydrof…
2000
A novel metal-free initiator, i.e. the salt of the tetrakis[tris(dimethylamino)phosphoranylidenamino]phosphonium (P5+) cation with the 1,1-diphenylhexyl (DPH–) anion was prepared by cation metathesis. It initiates a very fast and controlled anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate in THF. Kinetic investigations between –20 and +20°C using a flow tube reactor provide nearly linear first-order time-conversion plots with half-lives below 0.1 s, a linear dependence of the number-average degree of polymerization, and rather narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.2). 13C NMR measurements on a model of the active chain end (the P5+ salt of ethyl isobutyrate) in THF-d8 show 15 and 25…
Polymerizations of Cyclic Esters Catalyzed by Titanium Complexes Having Chalcogen-Bridged Chelating Diaryloxo Ligands
2002
A series of titanium complexes having tellurium-bridged chelating bis(aryloxo) ligands, [TiX2{2,2‘-Te(4-Me-6-tBu-C6H2O)2}]2 (5: X = Cl; 6: X = OiPr), catalyzed the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters such as e-caprolactone, δ-valerolactone, and l-lactide. The strong dependence of polymerizations on the solvent was observed in this catalytic system. When the polymerizations of e-caprolactone and l-lactide were carried out in toluene at 100 °C, tellurium-bridged bis(aryloxo)titanium complex 5 was found to give polymers with rather broad molecular weight distribution due to back-biting. When the polymerizations of e-caprolactone and l-lactide was carried out in anisole or in dioxane…
Anionic Polymerization of Alkyl (Meth)acrylates Using Metal-Free Initiators: Effect of Ion Pairing on Initiation Equilibria
1999
Metal-free anionic polymerizations of alkyl (meth)acrylates using tetrabutylammonium salts of diethylphenylmalonate, fluorene, and 9-ethylfluorene as initiators were performed in THF at 30 °C. A poor control of molecular weights, inconsistent initiator efficiencies, and broad or bimodal molecular weight distributions were obtained. The effect of counterion nature was studied from the polymerization of methyl methacrylate using the 1,1-diphenylhexyl anion with tetrabutylammonium, tetramethyldiethylguanidinium, and lithium as counterions under otherwise identical conditions. Metal-free initiators resulted in incomplete initiation which is attributed to the fact that the initiation is an equil…
Evidence of ternary interaction parameters for polymer solutions in mixed solvents from headspace-gas chromatography
2000
Partial vapor pressures of the volatiles have been measured for four solvent/precipitant/polymer systems at different temperatures. The high molecular weight compounds were polysulfone or polyethersulfone and the mixed solvent was either DMF/acetone or DMF/water. Systems containing the very powerful precipitant water exhibit a special phenomenon: Upon the addition of polymer to a mixed solvent of constant composition the partial vapor pressure of water increases by a factor of more than two before it falls to zero as the volume fraction of the polymer approaches unity. This particular situation cannot be modeled using binary interaction parameters only, in contrast to the results obtained w…
Synthesis and characterization of water-swellable?,?-polyasparthydrazide derivatives
1995
α, β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy) was crosslinked by glutaraldehyde to form water-swellable materials possessing a three-dimensional molecular network. Different crosslinking degrees were prepared varying glutaraldehyde/PAHy ratio and samples containing 5-fluorouracil were obtained by incorporating the drug into the polymer networks during the crosslinking reaction. All samples were characterized by swelling tests, thermal, x-ray and SEM analysis. Their microstructure was observed through scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, for samples containing the anticancer drug,in vitro release studies were performed in pH 7.4 buffer solution.
Aqueous Laponite Clay Dispersions in the Presence of Poly(ethylene oxide) or Poly(propylene oxide) Oligomers and their Triblock Copolymers
2008
The effect of polyethylene oxide (PEO) or polypropylene oxide (PPO) oligomers of various molecular weight (Mw) as well as of triblock copolymers, based on PEO and PPO blocks, on aqueous laponite RD suspensions was studied with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The radius of gyration (RG) increases for low Mw whereas the opposite occurs for larger Mw. This behavior is explained on the-basis that an effective RG is given by two contributions: (1) the size of the particles coated with the polymer and (2) the interactions between the laponite RD particles which are attractive for small and repulsive for large polymers. The SANS curves in the whole Q-range are well described by a model of n…
Pleiotropic Role of Recombinant Silaffin-Like Cationic Polypeptide P5S3: Peptide-Induced Silicic Acid Stabilization, Silica Formation and Inhibition …
2016
Silica-mineralizing organisms such as diatoms manage several aspects of silica chemistry when polymerizing monomeric silicic acid into amorphous silica. Silicic acid is undersaturated in the diatoms’ habitats and mechanisms of enrichment and prevention of uncontrolled mineralization are not well understood. Diatom-biosilica is associated with organic compounds, including polycationic, post-translationally modified peptides termed silaffins, which induce the condensation of silicic acid under supersaturated conditions. Here, we report the pleiotropic action of the designed silaffin-like peptide P5S3, which (i) stabilizes 4–8x silicic acid (in supersaturated conditions of 8.3 mm), (ii) decele…
