Perceptual Interactions in Complex Odor Mixtures

The perception of everyday odors relies on elemental or configural processing of complex mixtures of odorants. Theoretically, the configural processing of a mixture could lead to the perception of a single specific odor for the mixture; however, such a type of perception has hardly been proven in human studies. Here, we report the results of a sorting task demonstrating that a six-component mixture carries an odor clearly distinct from the odors of its components. These results suggest a blending effect of individual components’ odors in mixtures containing more than three odorants.

Two elements affect the efficacy of the numerical models of mobile-bed evolution: the prediction of the hydraulic roughness, related with both sediment distribution on the bed and flow depth, and the prediction of the hydraulic sorting, when the distribution of sediments on the bed is not uniform. In this work the bed profile variation is simulated, by using a numerical model proposed in previous works, in function of the variation of the friction factor, that reflects the coarsening of median sediment diameter, due to armouring process, and the variation of flow conditions. Apoptosis is a well-defined cellular process in which a cell dies, characterized by cell shrinkage and DNA fragmentation. In parasites like Leishmania, the process of apoptosis-like cell death has been described. Moreover upon infection, the apoptotic-like population is essential for disease development, in part by silencing host phagocytes. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of how apoptosis in unicellular organisms may support infectivity remains unclear. Molecular cloning and characterization of the complementary DNA coding for the B-chain of murine Clq

AbstractcDNA clones coding for the B-chain of murine Clq were isolated from a mouse macrophage library. The characterized clones include the total coding region plus a leader sequence. High homology was found with human Clq B-chain in the coding region (81%). Northern blot analysis of total RNA from different tissues of Balb/c mice showed one band of approximately 1.2 kb. The highest signal was found in RNA preparations of thioglycolate-activated peritoneal macrophages. The probe also hybridized with mRNA from spleen, thymus and heart. Extremely weak signals were found in liver, kidney, lung and intestine tissues.

Leukocyte infiltration of the central nervous system (CNS) occurs under certain pathogenic conditions and most often results in severe disorders. Therefore, the isolation and analysis of such infiltrating cell populations is necessary for elucidating the underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Here we describe a simple and straightforward protocol for cell isolation from the inflamed CNS, which combines mechanical dissociation and enzymatic degradation of the tissue.
