opennessThe article is devoted to the social dimension of linguistic phenomena occurring in Opole region. The Signum specificum of this region consists of: the dialect as a criterion for delimiting the Silesian group and the German language with the related issue of bilingualism. The aim of the article is to present the scope of research conducted by sociologists from Opole on the subject of the diverse linguistic phenomena occurring in the region. The article GWI2DZstates the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the new project of sociological research on bilingualism and multilingualism in the region, and presents the results of a pilot study conducted in 2019 among high school s…
A formula for the Euler characteristic of $\overline{{\cal M}}_{2,n}$
2001
In this paper we compute the generating function for the Euler characteristic of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of smooth n-pointed genus 2 curves. The proof relies on quite elementary methods, such as the enumeration of the graphs involved in a suitable stratification of \(\overline{{\cal M}}_{2,n}\).
Euler Characteristics of Moduli Spaces of Curves
2005
Let ${mathcal M}_g^n$ be the moduli space of n-pointed Riemann surfaces of genus g. Denote by ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ the Deligne-Mumford compactification of ${mathcal M}_g^n$. In the present paper, we calculate the orbifold and the ordinary Euler characteristic of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ for any g and n such that n>2-2g.
Exploring the explosive-effusive transition using permanent ultraviolet cameras
2017
Understanding the mechanisms that cause effusive eruptions is the key to mitigating their associated hazard. Here, we combine results from permanent ultra-violet (UV) cameras, and from other geophysical observations (seismic very long period, thermal, and infrasonic activity), to characterize volcanic SO2 flux regime in the period prior, during, and after Stromboli's August-November 2014 effusive eruption. We show that, in the two months prior to effusion onset, the SO2 flux levels are two times average level. We explain this anomalously high SO2 regime as primarily determined by venting of rapidly rising, pressurized SO2-rich gas pockets, produced by strombolian explosions being more frequ…

Planar Sobolev extension domains
2017
This doctoral thesis deals with geometric characterizations of bounded planar simply connected Sobolev extension domains. It consists of three papers. In the first and third papers we give full geometric characterizations of W 1, p-extension domains for 1 < p < 2 and p = 1, respectively. The second paper establishes a density result for Sobolev functions on planar domains, necessary for the solution for the case p = 1. Combining with the known results, we obtain a full geometric characterization of W 1, p-extension domains for every 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞.
