This paper focuses on the role dictionaries play in a translation situation. This role is analysed in terms of the tenets of the Function Theory of Lexicography, which proposes that users do not have needs in general but punctual needs in specific situations. For example, translators of accounting texts need insertable equivalents whose meanings and language behaviour are clearly described. Furthermore, translators also need contextual data on domain-specific consensual usage. Abstract In the field of languages for specific purposes, the diachronic study of medical dictionaries published in English is a territory that remains largely unchartered. The aim of this study is to pinpoint and analyse the emergence of the first medical glossaries and dictionaries in Great Britain so as to mark out the specialised territory of medical English. The language of stock exchange is a terminological system based on the general language that has its own form, content, and as a medium of specialised knowledge, it is used in professional communication. In the present paper, the technical analysis is discussed as an example of a stock exchange text that functions in an accurate symbiosis with a chart. This paper analyses current trends in the terminography field and translators’ needs regarding terminology resources. In this context, the Trandix tool is presented as a novel software application that pursues efficiency in terminological searches conducted by translators. This tool is based on Tarp’s Function Theory of Lexicography (2008a) and Spohr’s proposal concerning electronic multifunctional dictionaries (2009). A further goal of this paper is to serve as an example for future research in terminological resources aiming to meet translators’ requirements and expectations when carrying out terminology searches
