Rapid determination of sterols in vegetable oils by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns

A method for the determination of sterols in vegetable oils by CEC with UV-Vis detection, using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns, has been developed. To prepare the columns, polymerization mixtures containing monomers of different hydrophobicities were tried. The influence of composition of polymerization mixture was optimized in terms of porogenic solvent, monomers/porogens and monomer/crosslinker ratios. The composition of the mobile phase was also studied. AbstractPhenoloxidases and hemocyanins have similar type 3 copper centers although they perform different functions. Hemocyanins are oxygen carriers, while phenoloxidases (tyrosinase/catecholoxidase) catalyze the initial step in melanin synthesis. Tyrosinases catalyze two subsequent reactions, whereas catecholoxidases catalyze only the second one. Recent results indicate that hemocyanins can also function as phenoloxidases and here we show for the first time that hemocyanin can be converted to phenoloxidase. 1. The metabolism of phenol in goldfish (Carassius auratus), rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and goldenorfe ide (Leuciscus ideus melanotus) was compared. All three species produced phenyl sulphate, quinol sulphate and phenyl glucuronide. 2. The dose dependence of metabolism of phenol in goldfish was investigated. When the concn. of phenol was increased from 0.2 to 2 mg/l medium, that glucuronylated increased from 7 to 16% and that sulphated decreased from 63 to 47%. 3. Strictosidine synthase (STR; EC 4.3.3.2) plays a key role in the biosynthesis of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids by catalyzing the Pictet-Spengler reaction between tryptamine and secologanin, leading exclusively to 3alpha-(S)-strictosidine. The structure of the native enzyme from the Indian medicinal plant Rauvolfia serpentina represents the first example of a six-bladed four-stranded beta-propeller fold from the plant kingdom. A total of 10,033 hematophagous flies were captured. The Glossinidae, with six different species identified, was the most abundant group and constitutes about 60% of the captured flies compared to the Stomoxys (6 species also identified) and Tabanidae with 28% and 12%, respectively. Pythium stipitatum is a slow-growing oomycete and has been isolated from soil samples and plant materials from France, Tunisia, Turkey and India. Its morphological characteristics are reminiscent of those of Pythium ramificatum, discovered in Algeria by the corresponding author. Unfortunately, the Algerian isolate was not deposited in any culture collection and ultimately got lost. Those were the days when molecular description of fungi was not a fashion; hence, no molecular characteristics of the Algerian isolates were deposited to the GenBank. The level of 14-3-3gamma protein was determined in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and non-CJD patients applying a new and fast microplate assay (14-3-3 protein capture assay), based on the binding to a peptide comprising a phosphorylated recognition motif of 14-3-3 protein. The levels of the gamma-isoform of 14-3-3 protein in CSF samples from CJD patients (n=41) were significantly higher than those observed in patients with non-CJD dementias (n=36) suggesting that this capture assay is a reliable method in the diagnosis of CJD.
