Prioritisation of alternatives with analytical hierarchy process plus response latency and web surveys
2014
This paper introduces a new method that combines the well-known analytical hierarchy process (AHP) with a response latency metric. The response latency is the time taken by respondents to make choices over pairwise comparisons. The analytical calculation of relative importance weights of the alternatives is made by using a response latency model previously validated in several case studies. This combination aims to overcome some drawbacks of the traditional AHP related to the use of a rating scale (the so-called Saaty scale), and it is a natural way to involve response latency in established decisionmaking methods. This new method can be profitably adopted in web surveys where it is easy to…
A distributional approach for measuring wage discrimination and occupational discrimination separately
2011
Numerous statistical methodologies regarding the study of discrimination are based on the well-known Blinder-Oaxaca (1973) decomposition. This divides the wage differential between men and women into one part, which can be explained by differences in individual characteristics, and another part, which is interpreted as discrimination. This decomposition ignores any distributional issues in evaluating discrimination, thus permitting, undesirably, compensation between positively and negatively discriminated women. Jenkins (1994) has criticized this aspect, instead preferring a distributional approach. Del Rio et al. (2010), using a distributional approach, which hinges on the deprivational a…
SEDENTARINESS AND EDUCATION CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO SOCIOECONOMIC INEQUALITIES IN NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
2018
In Europe, the main non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and mental disorders, all together account for an estimated 86% of the deaths and 77% of the disease burden. Of the six WHO regions, Europe is the most affected by NCDs [1]. The detection and control of physiological and behavioral risk factors (BRFs) remain the essential preventive strategy to counteract not only the average population’s exposure to the main NCDs, but also socioeconomic inequalities, which are related to chronic diseases. The scope of this work is to investigate socioeconomic inequalities among the European elderly in NCDs and BRFs for NCD…

Measuring sustainable economic development through a multidimensional Gini index
2016
This paper analyses the evolution of sustainable economic development inequality in Italy as regards the efforts made by each administrative Region, as a response to the main EU policies issued by the environmental and energy sector. For this purpose a multidimensional generalization of the Gini index has been performed, taking into account two different dimensions (energy and environment), in a time frame of six years (2008-2013). The multidimensional Gini results confirm the positive effect recorded by certain EU policies in determining a reduction in the inequality levels among the Italian Regions. A counterfactual analysis further underlined the relevant role played by the energetic dim…
β-ray irradiation effects on silica nanoparticles
2015
By electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, we examine the amplitude of the signal typically due to a combination of NBOHC (Non Bridging Hole Center) and POR (Peroxy Radical) defects induced by β-ray irradiation (from 1.2 to 1200 MGy) in silica nanoparticles with diameter ranging from 7 to 20 nm. Our data indicate that the signal line-shapes recorded at different doses is quite independent from the particles sizes and from the dose. Furthermore, for each considered nanoparticles size, the concentration of defects is also almost constant with respect to dose, and it does not change significantly if measured after 2 or 9 months from the irradiation. By contrast, we observed that th…
Self-limiting and complete oxidation of silicon nanostructures produced by laser ablation in water
2016
Oxidized Silicon nanomaterials produced by 1064 nm pulsed laser ablation in deionized water are investigated. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy allows to characterize the structural and chemical properties at a sub-nanometric scale. This analysis clarifies that laser ablation induces both self-limiting and complete oxidation processes which produce polycrystalline Si surrounded by a layer of SiO2 and amorphous fully oxidized SiO2, respectively. These nanostructures exhibit a composite luminescence spectrum which is investigated by time-resolved spectroscopy with a tunable laser excitation. The origin of the observed luminescen…
Innovazione didattica con il Situated Learning e il Work-Based Learning: una indagine esplorativa sull’Alternanza Scuola Lavoro
2019
Situated teaching methodologies constitute an innovative perspective of the teaching practice, especially if applied in the extended educational context of the school and the extra-school, as in the case of the School-Work Alternation. Conceived within the Italian law 107 of 07132015, it has initiated new ways of collaboration between the school and the professional world with a networking involvement which re-situates both disciplinary and transversal learning, in a perspective of authentic acuisition on the field. Starting from these premises, the present exploratory survey was based on the analysis of the semi-structured interviews administered to 63 School-Work Alternation referent teac…
