Effect of pH and nitrite concentration on nitrite oxidation rate

The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. Genetic and Environmental Effects on Telomere Length and Lung Function : A Twin Study

Background The purpose of the study was to estimate the heritability of leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and lung function and to examine whether LTL and lung function share genetic or environmental effects in common. Methods 386 monozygotic and dizygotic Finnish twin sisters (age 68.4±3.4 years) were included. Relative LTL was determined from peripheral blood DNA by qPCR. Lung function measures of FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC, and PEF were derived from spirometry. Genetic modeling was performed with MPlus statistical software. Išēmisks insults izsauc patoloģiskas izmaiņas šūnu funkcionēšanā, it īpaši šūnu organellu darbībā, tai skaitā mitohondriju. Pētījuma mērķis bija izpētīt išēmijas un asinsrites reperfūzijas ietekmi uz insulta skarto un neskarto smadzeņu pusložu mitohondriju funkcijām, veicot filamenta inducētu vidējās cerebrālās artērijas oklūziju pelēm.
