Electronic Structure Changes across the Metamagnetic Transition in FeRh via Hard X-Ray Photoemission

2012

International audience; Stoichiometric FeRh undergoes a temperature-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition at similar to 350 K. In this Letter, changes in the electronic structure accompanying this transition are investigated in epitaxial FeRh thin films via bulk-sensitive valence-band and core-level hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with a photon energy of 5.95 keV. Clear differences between the AFM and FM states are observed across the entire valence-band spectrum and these are well reproduced using density-functional theory. Changes in the 2p core levels of Fe are also observed and interpreted using Anderson impurity model calculations. These results indicat…

Design of sheet stamping operations to control springback and thinning: a multi-objective stochastic optimization approach

2010

Abstract The aim of this paper is to develop a design tool for stamping processes, which is able to deal with the scattering of the final part quality due to the inner variability of such operations. Such variability is one of the main drawbacks for a robust process design. It results in a scattering of the most significant process results and depends on several parameters. The so called noise factors greatly influence final result variability, which often means rejecting parts and anyway achieving final properties different from the specified ones. The process investigated in the paper is an S-shaped U-channel stamping operation carried out on a lightweight aluminum alloy of automotive int…

A Comparative Analysis of Different Robust Design Approaches in Sheet Stamping Operations

2011

A crucial issue in sheet stamping optimization problems is related to the process robustness improvement: critical scattering in the investigated performances arises due to some noise variables influence, often evolving up design failure itself. In fact, strong variations in the final stamped part or fluctuations of strain distribution may lead to an uncontrolled process design. Such variability cannot be controlled but anyway it is possible to develop proper design tools able to identify robust process calibrations above which the noises variations effects are admissible. In this paper, a multi‐objective optimization problem was analyzed, with the aim to minimize both excessive thinning an…

A NEW PROGRESSIVE DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR COMPLEX SHEET METAL STAMPING OPERATIONS: COUPLING SPATIALLY DIFFERENTIATED RESTRAINING FORCES APPROACH AND M…

2010

The growing interest in sheet metal stamping processes, particularly in the automotive industry has led to three main issues in this field:*request of very complex shapes; *growing interest in springback control; *solution of multi-objective problems. These issues make a sheet metal stamping processes design very difficult and proper design methodologies to reduce times and costs are highly required. In this paper, a computer aided approach aiming to satisfy the mentioned issues is proposed. In particular, a progressive design approach based on the integration between numerical simulations, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Pareto optimal solutions search techniques was applied in orde…

Fluid-structure interaction approach with smoothed particle hydrodynamics and particle-spring systems

2022

This paper presents a novel three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach, where the meshless smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is used to simulate the motion of incompressible fluid flows, whilst structures are represented by a simplified approach based on particle-spring systems. The proposed FSI technique allows to use independent spatial-temporal resolutions for the fluid and structural computational domains. The particle-spring elastic constants are calibrated and relationships with the mechanical material properties, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, are determined. Fluid and structure computational domains are separated by interfaces made of triangular el…

Prader–Willi Syndrome with Angelman Syndrome in the Offspring

2021

We report the second case, to the best of our knowledge, of a mother with Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) who gave birth to a daughter with Angelman syndrome (AS). The menarche occurred when she was 16, and the following menstrual cycles were irregular, but she never took sexual hormone replacement therapy. At the age of 26, our patient with PWS became pregnant. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular genetic testing that revealed a ~5.7 Mb deletion in the 15q11.1–15q13 region on the paternal allele in the mother with PWS and the maternal one in the daughter with AS, respectively. Both the mother with PWS and the daughter with AS showed peculiar clinical and genetic features of the two syndrom…

Speleothem δ13C record suggests enhanced spring/summer drought in south-eastern Spain between 9.7 and 7.8 ka – A circum-Western Mediterranean anomaly?

2019

South-eastern Spain is one of the driest regions in Europe and thus, prone to drought. Terrestrial climate records covering the late Glacial and Holocene from this area are sparse. Here, we present a flowstone record from Cueva Victoria, south-eastern Spain, which covers the late Glacial (15 ka) to the mid-Holocene (7 ka) including the Younger Dryas (YD). Between the onset of the Bølling/Allerød (B/A) and the early Holocene, flowstone δ18O values progressively decrease in accordance with sea-surface temperatures in the Alboran Sea, indicating an increase in precipitation in south-eastern Spain and a supra-regional signal of North Atlantic temperature change. At the same time, decreasing δ13…

The role of historic and climatic factors in the distribution of crustacean communities in Iberian Mediterranean ponds

2013

SUMMARY 1. We studied 140 freshwater ponds in eastern Spain spanning a wide range of water source, hydroperiod and regional heterogeneity attributable to orographic and climatic differences. Our aim was to provide a typology for Mediterranean ponds using crustacean assemblages and to find key environmental thresholds that define these pond types. 2. To search for the environmental variables that define these communities, two complementary analyses were used: correspondence analyses (CA) and multivariate regression trees (MRT). We found a high level of specificity of crustaceans defining the different pond types. Three ponds, which were not associated with any of the large set of environment…

AbstractThe genetic conflict between parents and their offspring is a cornerstone of kin selection theory and the gene-centred view of evolution, but whether it actually occurs in natural systems remains an open question. Conflict operates only if parenting is driven by genetic trade-offs between offspring performance and the parent’s ability to raise additional offspring, and its expression critically depends on the shape of these trade-offs. Here we investigate the occurrence and nature of genetic conflict in an insect with maternal care, the earwig Forficula auricularia. Specifically, we test for a direct response to experimental selection on female future reproduction and correlated res…

Lekking in the black grouse— a test of male viability

1991

LEKS, where males congregate to display and females attend only to mate, present one of the most remarkable outcomes of sexual selection1. It is a common but untested belief that females mate with the most vigorous males2. In leks of the black grouse Tetrao tetrix, males dominant in winter flocks were most successful in mating, as were males winning fights over female dummies placed at territory boundaries. Males tear feathers from each others' tail ornaments in combats, and attractive males always had undamaged tails. We report here that by choosing victorious males, females mate with males that are most likely to survive the following six months. There is a strong association between fema…
