Bioactive extracts from persimmon waste: influence of extraction conditions and ripeness
2021
In this work, a bioactive persimmon extract was produced from discarded fruits. A central composite design was used to evaluate the effect of different extraction parameters and ripeness stages of persimmon fruits on the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the resulting extracts. Significantly greater phenolic contents were obtained from immature persimmon (IP) fruits. The optimum IP extract with the conditions set by the experimental design was industrially up-scaled and its composition and functional properties were evaluated and compared with those obtained under lab-scale conditions. Both extracts contained significant protein (>20%) and phenolic contents (∼11–27 mg GA/g …
Pharmacogenomics of Cameroonian traditional herbal medicine for cancer therapy
2011
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance A socio-economic burden associated with cancers is reported in Africa. Ethnopharmacological usages such as immune and skin disorders, inflammatory, and others chould be considered when selecting plants used to treat cancer, since these reflect disease states bearing relevance to cancer or a cancer symptoms. Materials and methods Documented compounds of Cameroonian medicinal plants were used as keywords in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) database to establish a library of cytotoxic compounds. Cellular and pharmacogenomic profiling was then performed for the 10 most cytotoxic natural products. By COMPARE and hierarchical cluster analyses, candidate …
Molecular characterization of the leucine cluster in Buchnera PSY, primary endosymbiont of the aphid Pemphigus spyrothecae
2002
ABSTRACT Buchnera strains from most aphid subfamilies studied to date have been found to carry the leucine gene cluster ( leuA , - B , - C , and - D ) on a plasmid, an organization unique among bacteria. Here, however, we demonstrate a classical chromosomal location of the cluster in Buchnera sp. strain PSY from the aphid Pemphigus spyrothecae (subfamily Pemphiginae). The genes that flank leuABCD in Buchnera sp. strain PSY appear to be adjacent in the genome of Buchnera sp. strain APS, a strain carrying a leucine plasmid. We propose that the presence of a leucine plasmid predates the diversification of symbiotic Buchnera and that the chromosomal location observed in Buchnera sp. strain PSY …

Discrimination of astringent and deastringed hard ‘Rojo Brillante’ persimmon fruit using a sensory threshold by means of hyperspectral imaging
2019
[EN] Persimmon fruit cv. 'Rojo Brillante' is an astringent cultivar due to its content of soluble tannins, which are insolubilised during the ripening of the fruit. Traditionally, the consumption of this cultivar has only been possible when the fruit is overripe and the texture is soft. Postharvest treatments based on exposing fruits to high CO2 concentrations allow astringency removal while preserving high flesh firmness. However, the effectiveness of this treatment is controlled by means of slow destructive methods. The aim of this work is to study the application of hyperspectral imaging in the spectral range 450-1040 nm to discriminate astringent (A) and deastringed (DA) fruits non-dest…
Modelling Inoculum Availability ofPlurivorosphaerella nawaein Persimmon Leaf Litter with Bayesian Beta Regression
2019
AbstractCircular leaf spot (CLS), caused byPlurivorosphaerella nawae, is a serious disease of persimmon (Diospyros kaki) inducing necrotic lesions on leaves, defoliation and fruit drop. Under Mediter-ranean conditions,P. nawaeforms pseudothecia in the leaf litter during winter and ascospores are released in spring infecting susceptible leaves. Persimmon growers are advised to apply fungicides for CLS control during the period of inoculum availability, which was defined based on ascospore counts under the microscope. A model of inoculum availability ofP. nawaewas developed and evaluated as an alternative to ascospore counts. Leaf litter samples were collected weekly in L’Alcúdia from 2010 to…
Detection of Invisible Damages in ‘Rojo Brillante’ Persimmon Fruit at Different Stages Using Hyperspectral Imaging and Chemometrics
2021
[EN] The main cause of flesh browning in 'Rojo Brillante' persimmon fruit is mechanical damage caused during harvesting and packing. Innovation and research on nondestructive techniques to detect this phenomenon in the packing lines are necessary because this type of alteration is often only seen when the final consumer peels the fruit. In this work, we have studied the application of hyperspectral imaging in the range of 450-1040 nm to detect mechanical damage without any external symptoms. The fruit was damaged in a controlled manner. Later, images were acquired before and at 0, 1, 2 and 3 days after damage induction. First, the spectral data captured from the images were analysed through…
"Non solo lei, Stirlitz, soffre di nostalgia": La nostalgia dell'est dell'agente infiltrato e la nostalgia dell'ovest del lettore nel romanzo di spio…
2016
In Iulian Semenov's 1969 Seventteen Moments of Spring the hero's (a Soviet undercover agent in Nazi Germany) nostalgia for the motherland is so strongly underscored thtat it becomes ridiculous. Such a stress on nostalgia was, as it appears, necessary in order to compensate the envy the reader would fatally feel for the comfort of his "European" life among the enemy. The double agent became, in fact, an allegory of the "double life" of the soviet citizen in the Seventies, regardless of the fact that the novel was sponsored by the KGB. Or was this an intentional projection of Iurii Andropov's self-constructed image?
Quinones and Benzophenones from the Medicinal Plants of Africa
2013
In this chapter, we discuss the chemistry of quinones and benzophenones: classification, nomenclature, biosynthesis, biological activity, and their distribution in nature. Genera such as Newbouldia, Kigelia, Aloe, Euclea, Diospyros, Bulbine, Rumex, and Kniphofia are rich sources of quinines, while the Guttiferae are rich in polyprenylated benzophenones. Most of these African species offer novel derivatives with interesting biological activities, suggesting that these species are potential sources of new drug candidates if properly investigated.
