Sense of coherence and health among home-dwelling older people.

Sense of coherence (SOC) is important for maintaining health. The aim of this study was to investigate if the SOC experience among home-dwelling physically active older people differs from that of hospital patients with the same age and sex. Data were collected with questionnaires and structured interviews containing Antonovsky’s SOC scale in an age- and sex-matched study group (n=160). Non-parametric statistical analyses were performed. No differences were found in SOC between home-dwelling individuals and patients. The rise of modern socio-digital technologies has fundamentally changed the everyday environments in which young people communicate with each other and cultivate interests. To gain a more sophisticated understanding of this phenomenon, this study provides in-depth, qualitative insights into adolescents’ experiences of their socio-digital developmental ecologies. Šis maģistra darbs ir empīrisks pētījums, kas veltīts Latvijas rakstiskās tulkošanas tirgus izpētei, tai skaitā jautājumam par tulkotāja statusu darba tirgū. Šā darba mērķis ir noskaidrot, kādi cilvēki (pēc noteiktiem kritērijiem) Latvijā nodarbojas ar tulkošanu un kāda ir viņu motivācija. Šai sakarā tika anketēti 54 tulkotāji. Tulkotāji atbildēja uz jautājumiem, saistītiem ar izglītību, kompetencēm, nodarbošanos un dažiem personīgiem jautājumiem. No aptaujas anketas analīzes rezultātiem tika noskaidrots, ka pārsvarā tulkotājiem nav specializētās izglītības, tomēr lielākā daļa plāno to iegūt, tajā pašā laikā neuzskatot, ka tā viņiem un tulkotājiem kopumā būtu obligāti nepieciešama. An extensive economics and regional science literature has discussed the importance of social capital for economic growth and development. Yet, what social capital is and how it is formed are elusive issues, which require further investigation. Here, we refer to social capital in terms of “civic” capital and “good culture,” as rephrased by Guiso, Sapienza, and Zingales and Tabellini. This thesis investigated whether dietary acid load has either short-term (4 to 7 days) or prolonged (12 weeks) effects on acid-base status at rest and during submaximal and maximal aerobic exercise; whether the effects of dietary acid load on acid-base status differ between adolescents, young adults and the elderly, and between men and women; and whether the changes in acid-base balance have a further effect on aerobic exercise performance. Asthma-Related Knowledge and Practices among Mothers of Asthmatic Children: A Latent Class Analysis

Mothers’ knowledge about childhood asthma influences management practices and disease control, but validating knowledge/practice questionnaires is difficult due to the lack of a gold standard. We hypothesized that Latent Class Analysis (LCA) could help identify underlying mother profiles with similar knowledge/practices. A total of 438 mothers of asthmatic children answered a knowledge/practice questionnaire. Using answers to the knowledge/practice questionnaire as manifest variables, LCA identified two classes: Class 1, “poor knowledge” (33%); Class 2, “good knowledge” (67%).
