Non-invasive peripheral vascular function, incident cardiovascular disease, and mortality in the general population

2021

AIMS Evidence suggests that peripheral vascular function is related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. We evaluated the associations of noninvasive measures of flow-mediated dilatation and peripheral arterial tonometry with incident CVD and mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS In a post-hoc analysis of the community-based Gutenberg Health Study, median age 55 years (25th/75th percentile 46/65) and 49.5% women, we measured brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (N = 12,599) and fingertip peripheral arterial tonometry (N = 11,125). After a follow-up of up to 11.7 years, we observed 595 incident CVD events, 106 cardiac deaths, and 860 deaths in total. Survival curves showed decreased e…

Impact of the metabolic syndrome on total arterial compliance in essential hypertension patients.

2007

The aim of the study was to cross-sectionally analyze, in a group of essential hypertension patients without diabetes mellitus, the influence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) on the stroke volume index to pulse pressure (SVi/PP) ratio, a measure of total arterial compliance. A total of 528 essential hypertension patients, aged 18 to 72 years, free from cardiovascular and renal disease (41% of whom had MS) were enrolled. All participants underwent routine blood chemistry, echocardiographic examination, and 3 blood pressure measurements at the end of echocardiographic examination. When compared with participants who did not have MS, hypertensive patients with MS exhibited lower SVi/PP ratio (0.…

Impact of insulin resistance on cardiac and vascular function.

2016

Background Insulin resistance (IR), constitutes an important cardiovascular risk factor and can cause ischemic heart disease. It can lead to left ventricular dysfunction with a mechanism independent of ischemic heart disease and it is closely associated with impaired vascular function. The aim of our study was to explore the impact of IR on cardiac and vascular function, in patients with cardiovascular risk factors but angiographically undamaged coronary arteries. Methods We studied 32 patients (62.06 ± 11.19 years) with cardiovascular risk factors. All patients underwent coronary angiography, echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound of carotid arteries and laboratory tests. Exclusion criteria …

Arterial stiffness indexes and serum cytokine levels in seronegative spondyloarthritis: relationships between stiffness markers and metabolic and imm…

2015

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between immunoinflammatory markers and indexes of arterial stiffness in patients with seronegative spondyloarthritis (SpA).Method: We enrolled consecutive patients with inflammatory seronegative SpA referred to a rheumatology outpatient clinic. Control subjects were patients admitted in the same period for any cause other than chronic inflammatory disease or acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured and the aortic pressure waveform was used to calculate the augmentation index (Aix). We also evaluated plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-1β…

Value and limits of computer-assisted tomography.

1980

Three years ago, at the VIIth International Congress of Radiology in Otorhinolaryngology, held in Copenhagen, the early impressive results of computer-assisted tomography (CAT) in otorhinolaryngology were presented. Since considerable technologic and diagnostic progress of CAT has taken place in the meantime, questions about the increase in CAT's value and the expansion of its limits are appropriate now. Computed and, in some cases, conventional tomograms of facial lesions are used in the discussion of these questions. There is no doubt of CAT's advance within the last few years; there are, however, limits of CAT to be emphasized: (a) coronal CAT might be uncomfortable (especially if the ga…

Associations of cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, and BMI with arterial health in middle‐aged men and women

2020

Abstract We investigated the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), physical activity (PA) with regard to aerobic and resistance training, and body mass index (BMI) with pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx) in middle‐aged adults with at least one cardiovascular risk factor. A total of 84 (46 men and 38 women) participated in the study. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured using a maximal graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer and was defined as maximal power output (Wmax) normalized for body weight‐0.35. Participation in aerobic and resistance training was assessed by a detailed questionnaire and BMI was calculated as weight (kg)/[height (m2)]. Pulse wave ve…

Immune-inflammatory markers and arterial stiffness indexes in subjects with acute ischemic stroke.

2010

Abstract No study has yet evaluated the relationship between arterial stiffness indexes and immuno-inflammatory pathway in patients with an acute cardiovascular or cerebrovascular event. The aim of our study was to evaluate in patients with acute ischemic stroke the relationship between immune-inflammatory markers and arterial stiffness indexes. Methods 107 subjects with acute ischemic stroke and 107 controls without stroke. We evaluated plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10), E-selectin, P-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1…

Arterial stiffness, endothelial and cognitive function in subjects with type 2 diabetes in accordance with absence or presence of diabetic foot syndr…

2017

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction is an early marker of cardiovascular disease so endothelial and arterial stiffness indexes are good indicators of vascular health. We aimed to assess whether the presence of diabetic foot is associated with arterial stiffness and endothelial function impairment. METHODS: We studied 50 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus and diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) compared to 50 diabetic subjects without diabetic foot, and 53 patients without diabetes mellitus, by means of the mini mental state examination (MMSE) administered to evaluate cognitive performance. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (Aix) were also evaluated by Applanation…
