Learning to be a psychostimulants addict with self-regulation therapy

This article presents the results of a single-case experiment of alternative treatments in which a participant applied the Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT) to reproduce the effects of a stimulant drug, methylphenidate, and a sedative, alcohol. The SRT is a learning procedure based on classic conditioning and suggestion that reproduces the effect of drugs by remembering the effects they have. The participant reproduced the effects of both drugs during ten sessions held on 5 consecutive days. Radioprotection with natural products may be relevant to the mitigation of ionizing radiation-induced damage in mammalian systems; in this sense, propolis extracts have shown effects such as antioxidant, antitumoral, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulant. We report for the first time a cytogenetic study to evaluate the radioprotective effect,in vitro, of propolis against radiation-induced chromosomal damage. This article presents an integrator model of changes in the externalizing and internalizing factors of personality grouped in the General Factor of Personality (GFP), based on the Unique Trait Personality Theory (UTPT) [1]. This theory proposes that a continuum exists between personality and psychopathology, as well as the existence of a GFP that occupies the apex of the hierarchy of personality, and extends from an impulsiveness-and-aggressiveness pole (externalizing spectrum) to an anxiety-and-introversion pole (internalizing spectrum). Coffee increases state anxiety in males but not in females.

Coffee, reproducing the conditions under which caffeine is normally ingested, containing 3, 75, 150 or 300 mg of caffeine was given to healthy male and female volunteers. 25-30 min after drinking the beverage, they completed the Spanish version of the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI). The beverage increased state anxiety, in a dose-dependent manner, in males but not in females. This could be due to a lesser sensitivity of females to coffee.

Effect of isoprinosine on IL-2, IFN-γ and IL-4 production in vivo and in vitro

The effects of an immunopotentiating drug, isoprinosine, on the splenocytes of BALB/c mice to produce cytokines were investigated. Isoprinosine enhanced IL-2 production, upregulating the expression of IL-2 receptor in vitro. It also significantly increased the IFN-gamma secretion and decreased the IL-4 production in vivo. The significance of these findings in terms of immune regulation is discussed.

The present study investigates the potential capacity of the immunostimulant Corynebacterium parvum (C.p.) to induce tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and blood monocytes (BMo) in vitro. Both at the mRNA and protein level, stimulation of PBMC and BMo upon C.p. induces TNF-alpha. Compared to the hitherto used TNF-alpha inducers in vitro such as Sendai virus, phytohemagglutinin or lipopolysaccharide the C.p. stimulus displayed a threefold stronger induction of TNF-alpha production (p less than 0.001).
