Recent improvements on micro-thermocouple based SThM
2017
The scanning thermal microscope (SThM) has become a versatile tool for local surface temperature mapping or measuring thermal properties of solid materials. In this article, we present recent improvements in a SThM system, based on a micro-wire thermocouple probe associated with a quartz tuning fork for contact strength detection. Some results obtained on an electrothermal micro-hotplate device, operated in active and passive modes, allow demonstrating its performance as a coupled force detection and thermal measurement system.
Space charge behavior of different insulating materials employed in AC and DC cable systems
2017
In this work, the space charge accumulation in three different XLPE based material has been carried out by using the PEA (Pulsed Electro-Acoustic) method. The specimens provided by a cables industry have been subjected to the same DC stress during polarization time at environment temperature. Afterwards, the high voltage generator has been turned off and the amount residual charge has been evaluated. The space charge profiles during polarization and depolarization have been carried out and compared. Finally, the distribution of electric field within the samples has been reported. In particular, the maximum distortion of electric field has been calculated by taking into account the distribut…
Key factors towards a high-quality additive manufacturing process with ABS material
2019
Abstract Additive Manufacturing technologies have gained a lot of popularity during the past years. The current challenge being the transition of this manufacturing technology from prototype oriented towards mass production. In order to achieve this, fabrication times and mechanical parameters must be improved. This paper aims to identify which are the parameters that have the highest influence on parts obtained with fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology from ABS material. In addition, this study identifies which are the most accurate methods to test the mechanical properties of FDM parts while still respecting ASTM standard for testing the tensile properties of plastics. It was found …
Binocular function measures as predictors of user performance in stereoscopic augmented reality
2021
Inconsistency between the binocular and focus cues in stereoscopic augmented reality overburdens the visual system leading to its stress. However, a high individual variability of tolerance for visual stress makes it difficult to predict and generalize the user gain associated with the implementation of alternative visualization technologies. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the binocular function and perceptual judgments in augmented reality. We assessed the task completion time and accuracy of perceptual distance matching depending on the consistency of binocular and focus cues in the stereoscopic environment of augmented reality. The head-mounted display was driven…

Space Charge Measurement under DC and DC Periodic Waveform
2018
In High Voltage systems, Partial Discharges (PDs) monitoring are one of the main diagnostic instrument to evaluate the reliability of the apparatus. Under Alternating Current (AC) stress, PDs detection and recognition techniques are well consolidated. On the contrary, the monitoring of PDs under Direct Current (DC) stress is difficult due to complexities related to the nature of the phenomenon, which cause the beginning of PDs events in proximity of the dielectric breakdown. This problem has been partially overcome by using a continuous Periodic waveform (DCP) with positive average value, as described in a recent published work. Under DC stress, another degradation factor is the Space Charg…
Influence of spray trajectories on characteristics of cold-sprayed copper deposits
2021
Abstract Industrial robots are widely used in cold spray (CS) as well as thermal spray to produce various coatings by precisely controlling kinematic parameters during the process. However, the robot trajectory and its effect on the characteristics of CS deposits are important, but not fully studied. This article introduces four typical spray trajectories, including zigzag path, cross path, parallel path, and spiral path, to elaborate thick CS Cu deposits, and characterizes the corresponding Cu deposits, respectively. The experimental results revealed that the spray trajectories have a major influence on the associated thermal history and the residual stress distribution. However, no signif…
Effect of surface finishing on the oxidation behaviour of a ferritic stainless steel
2017
Abstract The corrosion behaviour and the oxidation mechanism of a ferritic stainless steel, K41X (AISI 441), were evaluated at 800 °C in water vapour hydrogen enriched atmosphere. Mirror polished samples were compared to as-rolled K41X material. Two different oxidation behaviours were observed depending on the surface finishing: a protective double (Cr,Mn) 3 O 4 /Cr 2 O 3 scale formed on the polished samples whereas external Fe 3 O 4 and (Cr,Fe) 2 O 3 oxides grew on the raw steel. Moreover, isotopic marker experiments combined with SIMS analyses revealed different growth mechanisms. The influence of surface finishing on the corrosion products and growth mechanisms was apprehended by means o…
Mechanical properties of macroscopic magnetocrystals
2019
Abstract We studied experimentally and by numerical simulations the mechanical response of arrays of macroscopic magnetic spheres when an external stress is applied. First, the tensile strength of single chains and ribbons was analyzed. Then, simple cubic (cP), hexagonal (Hx) and hybrid (cP-Hx) structures, called here magnetocrystals , were assembled and subjected to tensile stress, bending stress and torsion until failure was reached. Atomistic crystalline structures are isotropic, but in the case of magnetocrystals, even when geometric isotropy is obeyed, dipolar magnetic interactions introduce a physical anisotropy which modifies, in a non-usual manner, the structures response to the kin…
Dielectric breakdown of fast switching LCD shutters
2017
Fast liquid crystal optical shutters due to fast switching, vibrationless control and optical properties have found various applications: substitutes for mechanical shutters, 3D active shutter glasses, 3D volumetric displays and more. Switching speed depends not only on properties of liquid crystal, but also on applied electric field intensity. Applied field in the shutters can exceed >10 V/micron which may lead to dielectric breakdown. Therefore, a dielectric thin film is needed between transparent conductive electrodes in order to reduce breakdown probability. In this work we have compared electrical and optical properties of liquid crystal displays with dielectric thin films with thickne…
