Start Spreading the News: A Comparative Experiment on the Effects of Populist Communication on Political Engagement in Sixteen European Countries

2018

Although populist communication has become pervasive throughout Europe, many important questions on its political consequences remain unanswered. First, previous research has neglected the differential effects of populist communication on the Left and Right. Second, internationally comparative studies are missing. Finally, previous research mostly studied attitudinal outcomes, neglecting behavioral effects. To address these key issues, this paper draws on a unique, extensive, and comparative experiment in sixteen European countries (N = 15,412) to test the effects of populist communication on political engagement. The findings show that anti-elitist populism has the strongest mobilizing eff…

Proper use of medical language: Main problems and solutions

2015

[EN]: Medical language should be characterized by its precision, emotional neutrality and stability. The effective communication of results of scientific studies depends on compliance with current standards of drafting and style; texts with defects can hinder interest in the findings. In this study, we discuss some of the most common problems and errors in medical language, including the abuse of abbreviations and foreign words, the use of improper words, syntax errors and solecisms, the most common errors in titles and the abuse of capital letters and the gerund. Investigators have effective tools for dealing with these problems, such as quality texts, critical dictionaries of questions an…

Voluntary distance running prevents TNF-mediated liver injury in mice through alterations of the intrahepatic immune milieu

2017

AbstractPhysical activity confers a broad spectrum of health benefits. Beyond the obvious role in metabolically driven diseases, the role of physical activity in acute liver injury is poorly explored. To study the role of physical activity in acute liver injury, a novel model of voluntary distance running in mice was developed and mice were subjected to acute liver injury induced by N-galactosamine (GalN) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Analyses included histological stains, immunoblotting, qRT-PCR and FACS analysis. Voluntary distance running increased to an average of 10.3 km/day after a learning curve. Running lead to a decrease in the absolute numbers of intrahepatic CD4+ T and B lymphocy…

Effect of aerobic exercise and diet on liver fat in pre-diabetic patients with non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease: A randomized controlled trial.

2017

AbstractThe study aimed to assess whether aerobic exercise (AEx) training and a fibre-enriched diet can reduce hepatic fat content (HFC) and increase glycaemic control in pre-diabetic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Six-hundred-and-three patients from seven clinics in Yangpu district, Shanghai, China were recruited. Of them 115 individuals aged 50–65-year fulfilled the inclusion criteria (NAFLD with impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance) and were randomly assigned into exercise (AEx n = 29), diet (Diet n = 28), exercise plus diet (AED n = 29), or no-intervention (NI n = 29) groups. Progressive supervised AEx training (60–75% VO2max intensity) was gi…

Hybrid styles in popular reporting on science :a study of "New Scientist’s" headlines

2014

This project explores some current trends in journalistic textual practices that reflect media outlets’ increased need to engage readers through hybridized forms of coverage. It aims to demonstrate to what extent popular journalism has been assimilated by science communication. It examines a sample of 250 headlines collected over the period of eight months from the list of five “most-read” articles as displayed on the webpage of the international magazine New Scientist. The linguistic, stylistic and rhetorical properties of these headlines are examined quantitatively and qualitatively. The analysis focuses on the ways in which scientific research is popularized through hybrid styles, includ…

Don Quijote en el manga: Traducción, transformación y adaptación en la cultura de masas

2017

During the 19th Century and with the first translations of Don Quixote to japanese, Cervantes’ work started to be part of the country’s mass culture. As a manifestation of this phenomenon, the manga absorbed the image of the knight-errant. This comic genre adapted it to its aesthetic criteria and merged it with its history and folklore. At the same time, the manga has been exported to Western world, where readers and artists are familiarized with its characteristical style. Hence, Don Quixote works together with the manga as a bidireccional bridge between Japan and Spain. Far from the novel, the universality of this classic will find its way into the drawing and will take as base the popula…

E-learning and language and style in Mainz and Münster

2006

This article reports on how online Language and Style was implemented and taught simultaneously and cooperatively at two German universities in the summer semester of 2004, in the English departments of the universities of Mainz (Patricia Plummer) and Münster (Beatrix Busse). In order to compare different learning and teaching styles, one-third of the course was taught in a traditional seminar-style mode while two-thirds consisted of online workshops. The authors cooperated extensively during the project, assessing and evaluating students’ responses and performances both quantitatively and qualitatively. This article focuses on (1) the place of e-learning and stylistics in our departments …
