FAIR and dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced perfusion imaging in healthy subjects and stroke patients.
2002
Purpose To compare dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DSC-MRI) and the flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) technique for measuring brain perfusion. Materials and Methods We investigated 12 patients with acute stroke, and 10 healthy volunteers with FAIR and DSC maps of regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV), mean transit time (MTT), and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Results In volunteers good gray/white-matter contrast was observed in FAIR, rCBF, and rCBV maps. Regions with high signal intensities in FAIR matched well with high values of rCBV and rCBF. In ischemic stroke patients a high correlation (r = 0.78) of the ipsi- to contralate…
Interaction of atenolol with furosemide and calcium and aluminum salts
1981
Six healthy subjects were treated with 100 mg atenolol. After a therapy-free interval of 4 wk the same subjects received the same dose of atenolol with furosemide, 40 mg, with calcium (as the lactate gluconate and carbonate), 500 mg, or with aluminum hydroxide, 5.6 gm. Atenolol alone and in combination was administered first as a single oral dose; a long-term 6-day treatment began 48 hr later. Addition of furosemide did not influence atenolol kinetics, but aluminum hydroxide led to an insignificant reduction (P greater than 0.05) of mean peak plasma levels of about 20% and of the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC -infinity) from 5818 to 4353 ng ml-1 hr (P greater than 0.05…
Contralateral hand anesthesia transiently improves poststroke sensory deficits.
2005
Objective To test a possible strategy to alleviate somatosensory deficits after stroke. Methods Here, we applied ischemic nerve block to the intact hand of patients with chronic stroke, which in healthy subjects elicits improvements in sensibility of the other hand. Results We found that sensibility in the affected hand improved with intact hand anesthesia, but not with intact foot anesthesia or no anesthesia. Interpretation We conclude that reduction of sensory input from the intact hand leads to site-specific improvements in tactile discriminative skills in the affected hand after the period of anesthesia, a potentially relevant finding in designing neurorehabilitative interventions. Aqueous Humor Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Retinitis Pigmentosa
2008
PURPOSE To determine the level of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in aqueous humors of patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS A prospective, comparative control study. Aqueous humor was collected from 16 eyes of 16 patients with RP. The level of VEGF-A was determined with a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The control group comprised 16 aqueous samples from 16 patients about to undergo cataract surgery and without any other ocular or systemic diseases. RESULTS The concentration of VEGF-A in aqueous humor was markedly lower in patients with RP than in control subjects (Mann-Whitney U test, P < 0.001). The level of VEGF-A was 94.9 +/- 99.8 …
Assessment of corneal morphological changes induced by the use of daily disposable contact lenses.
2015
To assess the effect of different disposable soft contact lenses upon corneal thickness, and upon anterior and posterior corneal curvatures using a dual-Scheimpflug imaging based device.Twenty-eight young, healthy subjects wore four different types of daily disposable soft contact lenses on four different days: Dailies Total1, Proclear 1 Day, Clariti 1-Day and 1-Day Acuvue Moist. The lenses had different material and water content. Pachymetry maps and keratometry values were obtained using the Galilei G4 twice a day: one before putting the lens on and one after an eight-hour period of contact-lens wear. Measurements were also recorded without any contact lenses being worn during a day.Clari…
Nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite and nitrate) in young patients with recent acute myocardial infarction
2008
Nitric oxide (NO) has a role in the pathophysiology of acute and chronic cardiovascular events. We studied the plasma concentration of NO stable end products (nitrite and nitrate - NO x ) in 43 patients aged <46 years, with recent acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The evaluation was effected at the initial stage, after 3 and 12 months. We subdivided the patients into subgroups according to the number of the main cardiovascular risk factors and to the extent of coronary disease. In the whole group the NO x concentration was initially increased and progressively decreased after 3 and 12 months, remaining at both times significantly higher than in control subjects. The patients with more risk…
Reference interval by the indirect approach of serum thyrotropin (TSH) in a Mediterranean adult population and the association with age and gender.
2019
Abstract Background The serum concentration of thyrotropin (TSH) represents a first-line test in diagnostic algorithms. The estimation of TSH reference intervals (RIs) is still a matter of debate due to the high prevalence of subclinical disease making difficult the definition of truly healthy subjects. The aim of this study was to estimate TSH RIs in healthy subjects and to evaluate the effect of age and gender on TSH concentration. Methods Forty-four thousand one hundred and fifty-six TSH data were collected between July 2012 and April 2018 at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, University-Hospital, Palermo. Common and sex-specific RIs were estimated by Arzideh’s indirect method after …
Prospective Trial of Functional Thyrotropin Receptor Antibodies in Graves Disease
2019
Abstract Context Scarce data exist regarding the relevance of stimulatory (TSAb) and blocking (TBAb) thyrotropin receptor antibodies in the management of Graves disease (GD). Objective To evaluate the clinical utility and predictive value of TSAb/TBAb. Design Prospective 2-year trial. Setting Academic tertiary referral center. Patients One hundred consecutive, untreated, hyperthyroid GD patients. Methods TSAb was reported as percentage of specimen-to-reference ratio (SRR) (cutoff SRR < 140%). Blocking activity was defined as percent inhibition of luciferase expression relative to induction with bovine thyrotropin (TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone) alone (cutoff > 40% inhibitio…
Blue-yellow deficiency in workers exposed to low concentrations of organic solvents
1997
Objectives: To evaluate the effects of low concentrations of organic solvents on color vision. Methods: Color vision was examined in 24 workers exposed to mixtures of solvents and in 24 control subjects. Exposure to mixtures was below the threshold-limit values. Color vision ability was assessed using the Ishihara plates (to screen for congenital dyschromatopsia), the Farnsworth panel D-15 test, the Lanthony desaturated panel D-15 test, and the Standard Pseudoisochromatic Plates part 2 (SPP2 test). Results: The comparatively less sensitive Farnsworth panel D-15 test failed to show any difference between the groups, but the Lanthony panel D-15 desaturated test as well as the SPP2 test showed…
Gender differences on oxidative stress markers and complement component C3 plasma values after an oral unsaturated fat load test
2020
Abstract Objective Post-prandial lipaemia (PL), oxidative stress (OS), and complement component C3 (C3) values are related to the atherosclerosis process. The post-prandial response of C3 after an oral fat load test (OFLT) using unsaturated fat is poorly addressed. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the post-prandial response of OS markers and C3 values in men and women after an OFLT using unsaturated fat. Methods The study included a total of 22 healthy subjects with normal lipids and normal blood glucose (11 men and 11 pre-menopausal women). An oral unsaturated fat load test (OFLT: 50 g fat per m2 body surface) was performed using a commercial liquid preparation of long chai…
