The application of the supported liquid membrane and molecularly imprinted polymers as solid acceptor phase for selective extraction of biochanin A f…

2018

An efficient sample clean-up and preconcentration procedure for phytoestrogens analysis in urine has been developed. It was based on a combination of solid phase extraction with hollow-fiber supported liquid membrane and molecularly imprinted beads (MIPs-HF-SLM-SPE). The molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were synthesized by precipitation polymerization technique with biochanin A (BCA) as a template, giving narrowly dispersed microspheres with a regular shape. As the functional monomer, (dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (-DEM) turned out to be better than methacrylic acid (MAA) to get the best-imprinted effects. The MIPs used as sorbents in the MIPs-HF-SLM-SPE extraction process exhibite…

Machine Learning Regression Approaches for Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) Retrieval with S2-MSI and S3-OLCI Simulated Data

2018

The colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) variable is the standard measure of humic substance in waters optics. CDOM is optically characterized by its spectral absorption coefficient, a C D O M at at reference wavelength (e.g., ≈ 440 nm). Retrieval of CDOM is traditionally done using bio-optical models. As an alternative, this paper presents a comparison of five machine learning methods applied to Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 simulated reflectance ( R r s ) data for the retrieval of CDOM: regularized linear regression (RLR), random forest regression (RFR), kernel ridge regression (KRR), Gaussian process regression (GPR) and support vector machines (SVR). Two different datasets of radiative t…

Distributed learning automata-based scheme for classification using novel pursuit scheme

2020

Learning Automata (LA) is a popular decision making mechanism to “determine the optimal action out of a set of allowable actions” (Agache and Oommen, IEEE Trans Syst Man Cybern-Part B Cybern 2002(6): 738–749, 2002). The distinguishing characteristic of automata-based learning is that the search for the optimising parameter vector is conducted in the space of probability distributions defined over the parameter space, rather than in the parameter space itself (Thathachar and Sastry, IEEE Trans Syst Man Cybern-Part B Cybern 32(6): 711–722, 2002). Recently, Goodwin and Yazidi pioneered the use of Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) for solving classification problems (Goodwin and Yazidi 2016). In th…

Cracking the nut: Geographical adjacency of sister taxa supports vicariance in a polytomic salamander clade in the absence of node support

2008

The urodelan genus Lyciasalamandra, which inhabits a relatively small area along the southern Turkish coast and some Aegean islands, provides an outstanding example of a diverse but phylogenetically unresolved taxon. Molecular trees contain a single basal polytomy that could be either soft or hard. We here use the information of nuclear (allozymes) and mitochondrial (fractions of the 16S rRNA and ATPase genes) datasets in combination with area relationships of lineages to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among Lyciasalamandra species in the absence of sufficient node support. We can show that neither random processes nor introgressive hybridization can be invoked to explain that the m…

Innovating European Long-Term Care Policies through the Socio-Economic Support of Families: A Lesson from Practices

2022

LTC and socio-economic deprivation of families are two relevant issues in international debate. The economic or time investment made by families in caregiving has an impact on the socio-economic status of family members in terms of economic means and social inclusion. This study analyzes the practices that are supported by home LTC, examining their characteristics, identifying their strengths, weaknesses, drivers, and barriers, as well as identifying social innovation aspects. The study provides a qualitative interpretative comparison of 22 practices from eight countries, representing the four LTC care models existing in Europe. Cross-studies aid in the development of sustainable policies. …

A Machine Learning Model to Predict Intravenous Immunoglobulin-Resistant Kawasaki Disease Patients: A Retrospective Study Based on the Chongqing Popu…

2021

Objective: We explored the risk factors for intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) resistance in children with Kawasaki disease (KD) and constructed a prediction model based on machine learning algorithms. Methods: A retrospective study including 1,398 KD patients hospitalized in 7 affiliated hospitals of Chongqing Medical University from January 2015 to August 2020 was conducted. All patients were divided into IVIG-responsive and IVIG-resistant groups, which were randomly divided into training and validation sets. The independent risk factors were determined using logistic regression analysis. Logistic regression nomograms, support vector machine (SVM), XGBoost and LightGBM prediction models wer…

Chapter 8 Native and Bonded Silicas in Aqueous Sec

1988

Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the properties of packings and columns in correlation to chromatographic separations in size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and provides guidelines for optimum support design. The chapter provides a survey of the current state-of-the-art with respect to the surface modification of silica for SEC packings in aqueous eluents. The properties of commercial packings and columns are listed and compared. An advice is also discussed on the operation and maintenance of columns with a view to achieving high resolution and long life-time. In SEC, solute elution is based on equilibrium, entropy-controlled size exclusion process. According to their size, the so…

Nuove strategie gestionali per la competitività di un terminal container di transhipment: sviluppo di strumenti di supporto alle decisioni per la pia…

2012

In a container terminal task assignment optimization may not be sufficient to ensure efficiency. By contrast, a systemic approach to terminal operations planning is required to ensure efficient coordination day by day of the all the operations in-volved. As far as management is concerned, a number of interacting factors need to be taken into account, ranging from prediction of ships’ arrivals to manpower and vehicles optimization strategies for the different work shifts. This paper describes three modules comprising a Decision Support System designed to assist port operations planners: - Ships’ arrivals forecasting module; - Optimal human resources allocation module; - Maintenance process e…

A DIGITAL BEHAVIOURAL ASSESSMENT APPLICATION TO APPLY POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT IN SCHOOL WIDE INTERVENTION

2018

The Behavioural Assessment to improve School Environment (BASE) European Erasmus+ project responses to the European requirement of reforming the whole scholastic disciplinary system identifies in the proven US-born concept of the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) one possible solution, and tries to adapt its practical and evidence-based principles to the heterogeneous European school settings. Recently, scientific studies (Sugai, Horner, 2016) have emphasized the promising role of PBS in reducing the occurrence of behavioural problems by setting up a preventive, proactive and multilevel system based on the direct involvement of the entire school team: starting from teachers, school leaders u…
