Selective, Highly Sensitive, and Rapid Detection of Genomic DNA by Using Gated Materials:MycoplasmaDetection

2013

The coupling of gated-indicator delivery with highly specific biochemical recognition is an innovative strategy for the detection of DNA sequences, able to compete with classical methods which need PCR amplification, in important areas such as point-of-care diagnostics or detection of specific biological contaminations with pathogens. Such comparatively simple and cheap yet highly selective and sensitive assays hold promise for use in less-developed areas of the world.

Peri-implant parameters in head and neck reconstruction: influence of extraoral skin or intraoral mucosa.

2009

Objective: This study is designed to assess dental implants supporting overdentures in edentulous patients with operated head and neck malignancies using parameters to detect peri-implant disease. Material and methods: Thirty-four implants supporting overdentures in 34 oral cancer patients were examined. Clinical parameters [plaque index, probing depth, bleeding on probing (BOP), origin of peri-implant soft tissue, and amount of irradiation] were recorded, and microbiological identification of periodontal pathogens was carried out by DNA–DNA hybridization. To identify yeast species, the samples were cultivated on Sabouraud agar plates and subsequently identified by API 20C AUX plates. An im…

An Intelligent System for Decision Support in Bioinformatics

2011

The enormous array of computational techniques and data available due to today's use of high-throughput technologies can be quite overwhelming for researchers investigating biological problems. For any problem, there are many possible models and algorithms giving different results. We present a new Intelligent System that supports the selection, configuration and operation of strategies and tools in the bioinformatics domain. The Institute for High Performance Computing and Networking (ICAR-CNR) and the University of Palermo are developing an intelligent system that supports bioinformatics research. The system guides the researcher in building a data analysis workflow and acts as an interfa…

Principles of Damage Control in the Elderly

2017

A steadily increase of severely injured elderly patients may be expected. Comorbidities are present in the majority of these patients and negatively influence outcome. Blunt trauma is the leading cause of high-energy injuries in the elderly. Motor vehicle accidents, either as driver or as pedestrian hit by a car, and falls from height are the most important mechanisms of polytrauma. The principles of advanced trauma life support (ATLS) should also apply for elderly persons. Underestimation of the severity of injury is a common problem leading to undertriage. A basic rule of primary care is to avoid the lethal triad of hypothermia, coagulopathy and acidosis. Emergent invasive monitoring redu…

2016

Supported liquid membrane extraction with single hollow fiber for the analysis of fluoroquinolones from environmental surface water samples

2010

Abstract In this work, the simple analytical method for the determination of four fluoroquinolone antibiotics: ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin and danofloxacin, in environmental surface water samples is described. Sample pretreatment step was performed by the application of a technique based on supported liquid membrane extraction with the configuration of single hollow fiber (HF-SLM). The HPLC system with diode array detection was used for final analysis of studied analytes. Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency during HF-SLM enrichment, such as type of membrane diluent, pH of donor (sample) and acceptor phases, as well as an enrichment time and salt content of sa…

BioTIME: A database of biodiversity time series for the Anthropocene

2018

Abstract Motivation The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene. Main types of variables included The database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. In addition, th…

CSCW '98 workshop program

1998

This workshop will discuss different approaches used to evaluate CSCW systems. Our goal is to produce a taxonomy of evaluation methodologies for CSCW systems, idenillYing the type of systems for \\hich a technique is most useful, the stage of development in \\bich a methodology is appropriate, the resources needed to conduct an evaluation, and the appropriate measures for the various techniques. We plan to discuss various methods of data collection for collaborative work and identi1)' the evaluation methodologies for \\hich various types of data collection are most appropriate. Other issues we hope to discuss during the workshop include sharing and comparing collected data, the usefulness o…

Machine learning in remote sensing data processing

2009

Remote sensing data processing deals with real-life applications with great societal values. For instance urban monitoring, fire detection or flood prediction from remotely sensed multispectral or radar images have a great impact on economical and environmental issues. To treat efficiently the acquired data and provide accurate products, remote sensing has evolved into a multidisciplinary field, where machine learning and signal processing algorithms play an important role nowadays. This paper serves as a survey of methods and applications, and reviews the latest methodological advances in machine learning for remote sensing data analysis.

Sequential Learning with LS-SVM for Large-Scale Data Sets

2006

We present a subspace-based variant of LS-SVMs (i.e. regularization networks) that sequentially processes the data and is hence especially suited for online learning tasks. The algorithm works by selecting from the data set a small subset of basis functions that is subsequently used to approximate the full kernel on arbitrary points. This subset is identified online from the data stream. We improve upon existing approaches (esp. the kernel recursive least squares algorithm) by proposing a new, supervised criterion for the selection of the relevant basis functions that takes into account the approximation error incurred from approximating the kernel as well as the reduction of the cost in th…
