The dynamics of a suspension of rodlike particles has been investigated using dynamic light scattering. The sols investigated in this contribution are not monodisperse by nature and age with time. An evaluation of the first cumulant of the autocorrelation functions as a function of scattering vector is expected to yield the dimensions of the particles. While the data can be excellently fitted by the theoretical expressions for freshly prepared sols, we found that the theoretically expected interrelation of the (three) diffusion coefficients is not reproduced, which prohibits the unequivocal determination of the particle dimensions. Hiding in plain view: Colloidal self-assembly from polydisperse populations.

We report small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments on aqueous dispersions of colloidal silica with a broad monomodal size distribution (polydispersity 18%, size 8 nm). Over a range of volume fractions the silica particles segregate to build first one, then two distinct sets of colloidal crystals. These dispersions thus demonstrate fractional crystallization and multiple-phase (bcc, Laves AB$_2$, liquid) coexistence. Their remarkable ability to build complex crystal structures from a polydisperse population originates from the intermediate-range nature of interparticle forces, and suggests routes for designing self-assembling colloidal crystals from the bottom-up.
Depletion-induced percolation in networks of nanorods.

Above a certain density threshold, suspensions of rod-like colloidal particles form system-spanning networks. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate how the depletion forces caused by spherical particles affect these networks in isotropic suspensions of rods. Although the depletion forces are strongly anisotropic and favor alignment of the rods, the percolation threshold of the rods decreases significantly. The relative size of the effect increases with the aspect ratio of the rods. The structural changes induced in the suspension by the depletant are characterized in detail and the system is compared to an ideal fluid of freely interpenetrable rods.

We investigate the force-induced diffusive motion of a tracer particle inside a glass-forming suspension when a strong external force is applied to the probe (active nonlinear microrheology). A schematic model of mode-coupling theory introduced recently is extended to describe the transient dynamics of the probe particle, and used to analyze recent molecular-dynamics simulation data. The model describes non-trivial transient displacements of the probe before a steady-state velocity is reached. Nonequilibrium depletion interactions in active microrheology.

Entropic depletion forces arise between mesoscopic bodies that are immersed in a suspension of macromolecules, such as colloid-polymer mixtures. Here we consider the case of a driven colloidal probe in the presence of another, passive colloidal particle, both solvated in an ideal bath of small spherical particles. We calculate the nonequilibrium forces mediated by the depletants on the two colloidal particles within a dynamical superposition approximation (DSA) scheme. In order to assess the quality of this approximation, and to obtain the colloidal microstructure around the driven probe, we corroborate our theoretical results with Brownian dynamics simulations.
Dense Solid-Liquid Off-Bottom Suspension Dynamics: Simulation and Experiment

Dense solid-liquid off-bottom suspension inside a baffled mechanically agitated stirred tank equipped with a standard Rushton turbine is investigated. Dynamic evolution of the suspension from start up to steady state conditions has been inspected by both visual experiments and computational fluid dynamics. A classical Eulerian-Eulerian Multi Fluid Model along with the “homogeneous” k-epsilon turbulence model is adopted to simulate suspension dynamics.
