A novel experimental apparatus for measuring gas absorption has been adopted to study sorption of carbon dioxide CO2 and vinylidenefluoride (VDF) in a semi crystalline polymer, namely poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF). The experimental technique allows to calculate simultaneous absorption of different components in the polymer phase, through a gas chromatographic determination of the composition of the fluid phase. To take into account indirectly the polymer swelling, a suitable not-absorbable probe, namely argon, has been added to the fluid phase. Injectable in situ forming hydrogels based on natural and synthetic polymers for potential application in cartilage repair

In this work we prepared two new hyaluronic acid (HA) based in situ forming hydrogels for the potential treatment of articular cartilage damages. In particular the amino derivative of HA (HA-EDA) and its graft copolymer with α-elastin (HA-EDA-g-α-elastin) were crosslinked, in mild physiological conditions via Michael-type addition, with α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) derivatized with divinylsulfone (DV). Absorption and desorption of liquid water by a superabsorbent polyelectrolyte: Role of polymer on the capacity for absorption of a ground

To study the potentialities of a polyelectrolyte superabsorbent for the storage of water, we have studied a ground representative of the area of Haouz (area of Marrakesh, South of Morocco) in the presence of polymer. We sought the optimal proportions allowing the best retention of water by the mixture made up of the polymer and the ground and to prolong the storage period of water in the ground. We have also studied the effect of certain ions and the pH on the capacity for absorption of polymer. Abstract Mass-transfer kinetics seems to be highly favored in siliceous materials constructed from the aggregation of mesoporous nanoparticles. Besides intra-particle mesopores, over the course of the aggregation process an inter-particle (textural) large pore system is generated. Diffusion constrains through the resulting hierarchically structured pore systems mainly depend on the characteristics of the intra-particle mesopores. Influence of hydrocolloid nature on the structure and functional properties of emulsified edible films

Abstract To investigate the influence of polymer behaviors on the structure and the functional properties of emulsified films, agar (AG) and cassava starch (CAS) were used as hydrocolloid continuous phases in which hydrogenated vegetable oil (VGB81) was dispersed. Different ratios of hydrophilic/hydrophobic materials (HB/HL) were also used in film formulations to study the evolution of film-emulsion structure. Microscopically observed, VGB–CAS emulsified films exhibit a similar bilayer structure. However, there was just a migration and an aggregation of lipid particles. The stress–stain and ultimate behavior in compression of homogeneous and macroporous beads of styrene–divinylbenzene copolymers has been investigated in the dry state or in equilibrium with toluene, acetone, methanol, and water. The penetration modulus A indicates sensitively the transition from the glassy into the rubbery state induced by an increase in temperature or swelling. Preparation and characterization of new hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid and α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide

Abstract Hyaluronic acid (HA) has been crosslinked with α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy). The crosslinking reaction has been performed in acidic medium in the presence of various amounts of N-ethyl-N′-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). All obtained samples have been characterized by FT-IR analysis and swelling measurements in double distilled water that have confirmed the occurrence of a chemical linkage between two polymers and the affinity towards aqueous medium of HA–PAHy networks, respectively. Equilibrium swelling and solvation studies on crosslinked polyacrylamides

Polyacrylamide (PA) crosslinked with four different crosslinking agents, triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (NNMBA), hexanediol dimethacrylate (HDDMA) and divinylbenzene (DVB), with mole percents ranging from 5 to 20, was prepared by solution polymerization and subjected to swelling and solvation studies. Sorption of n-hexane in amorphous polystyrene

Sorption properties of pure n-hexane vapor in amorphous polystyrene (PS) were studied at 298 K by thermogravimetry under controlled vapor pressure. Two sorption-desorption cycles were performed by varying the relative pressure between 0 and 0.91. Mixing of PS with n-hexane resulted in a strong plasticization, which was evidenced by quite significant depression in the glass transition temperature of the polymer as shown by differential scanning calorimetry. Maximum quantity of n-hexane sorbed in the PS at 298 K and at a pressure close to saturation was about 12.4 wt %. Friction between Polymer Brushes in Good Solvent Conditions:  Steady-State Sliding versus Transient Behavior

Previous molecular dynamics simulations of friction between polymer brushes in relative sliding motion [Kreer, T.; Muser, M. H.; Binder, K.; Klein, J. Langmuir 2001, 17, 7804] are extended beyond steady-state conditions. We study two different protocols:  (i) stop and return and (ii) stop and go.
