Perceived Benefit From Hearing Aid Use and Life-Space Mobility Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults

2018

Objectives: To examine the association between perceived benefit from hearing aid (HA) use and life-space mobility among older adults. Method: Cross-sectional analysis of 76- to 91-year-old community-dwelling adults ( n = 702). Data on perceived hearing with and without a HA were obtained via postal questionnaire and data on life-space mobility (Life-Space Assessment, range = 0-120) via phone interview. Results: Participants who perceived more benefit from HA use, had a better life-space mobility score ( M = 65, SD = 2.6) than participants who had less benefit from using a HA ( M = 55, SD = 3.2). Participants who benefitted more from HA use did not differ from those who did not have a HA (…

Motor development of infants with univentricular heart at the ages of 16 and 52 weeks

2013

Purpose To compare the motor development of patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and other types of univentricular heart (UVH) with peers who are healthy at the ages of 16 and 52 weeks. Methods Motor development was assessed with the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). Results Both the 23 patients with HLHS and the 13 patients with UVH had lower total AIMS scores in both observations than the controls. At the age of 52 weeks, patients with HLHS had significantly lower scores in all 4 AIMS subscales, whereas patients with UVH had lower scores only in the prone and standing subscales. Conclusion Motor development of patients with HLHS or UVH is delayed during the first year of …

Mental health service users' and professionals' relationship with games and gaming

2017

Background Games and elements of gamification can be utilized in mental healthcare to provide customized interventions for the service users. However, very little evidence exists as to what kind of experiences service users and professionals have towards games and gaming, and what their perceptions of the phenomenon are. This sort of information is needed to help professionals put game-based interventions actively into practice in mental health services. Research objectives The objective is to describe the experiences and perceptions of digital games and gaming from the perspectives of mental health service users and mental health professionals. Methods In this qualitative study, data consi…

Effects of whole-body vibration exercise on muscular strength and power, functional mobility and self-reported knee function in middle-aged and older…

2013

Abstract Background Whole-body vibration training using vertical-vibration machines is called “acceleration training” (AT). The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of AT on lower-limb muscular strength and power, functional mobility and self-reported knee function in middle-aged and older Japanese women with knee pain. Methods Thirty-eight middle-aged and older Japanese women (aged 50–73 years) with knee pain were divided into two groups: (1) the AT group (n = 29) engaged in AT three times per week for eight weeks, and (2) the control group (C group, n = 9). The AT program consisted of flexibility training, strength training of mainly the quadriceps and surrounding muscles and…

Framework Towards a Virtual Tool for the Front-End of Employee-Driven Innovation in Healthcare

2017

This paper combines entrepreneurial behaviour and service innovation in order to investigate the use of the Idea Window; a virtual tool planned for employee-driven service development in a healthcare organisation. The empirical study investigates the tool used as a method for supporting employees' collaborative knowledge sharing in front-end of innovation in two study cases. Particularly, the research findings focus on how the virtual tool can be used for tackling the unknown - tacit knowledge, hidden possibilities, and initiatives in the context. The results are based on Idea Window entries and survey data collected in a Finnish hospital ward.

Exploring health information technology implementation success factors: a comparative investigation in Nordic countries

2016

The implementation of health information technology (HIT) can improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services. There is a gap in terms of generalising and systematising the results of previous research and in understanding HIT implementation worldwide. The majority of studies on HIT implementation have been conducted in North America, most of which are case studies or other qualitative research. In this research, we surveyed IT managers in Nordic healthcare and used factor analysis to uncover success factor groups. Six groups emerged: culture conducive to change, quality of system and service, collaboration, alignment, end-user involvement, and management commitment. We found that…

The Association between Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Gut Microbiota Composition in Premenopausal Women

2017

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and gut microbiota composition in premenopausal women. The participants consisted of 71 premenopausal Finnish women (aged 19–49 years). Gut microbiota were analyzed using flow cytometry, 16S rRNA gene hybridization and DNA-staining. Maximum oxygen uptake (VO₂ₘₐₓ) was assessed by respiratory gas analyzer and body composition by Bioimpdance. We found that participants with low VO₂ₘₐₓ had lower Bacteroides, but higher Eubacterium rectale-Clostridium coccoides than the high VO₂ₘₐₓ group (p < 0.05 for all). VO₂ₘₐₓ was inversely associated with EreC (r = −0.309, p = 0.01) but not with other bact…

Are body mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio associated with leptin in 90-year-old people?

2013

Data on how body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are associated with body fat in the oldest-old people are scarce. The purpose of this study was to examine if BMI, WC or WHR are associated with leptin, a biological surrogate measure of body fat in 90-year-old people. The data comes from the Vitality 90+ Study, a prospective population-based study of people living in Tampere, Finland. BMI, WC, WHR and plasma concentration of leptin were available for 160 women and 54 men aged 90 years. BMI and WC had a strong significant positive association with leptin both in women and in men, but WHR was associated with leptin only in men. In conclusion, based on th…
