Possible links between intestinal permeablity and food processing: a potential therapeutic niche for glutamine

2010

Increased intestinal permeability is a likely cause of various pathologies, such as allergies and metabolic or even cardiovascular disturbances. Intestinal permeability is found in many severe clinical situations and in common disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. In these conditions, substances that are normally unable to cross the epithelial barrier gain access to the systemic circulation. To illustrate the potential harmfulness of leaky gut, we present an argument based on examples linked to protein or lipid glycation induced by modern food processing. Increased intestinal permeability should be largely improved by dietary addition of compounds, such as glutamine or curcumin, which…

Comparative study of the lubricant performance of Compritol® HD5 ATO and Compritol® 888 ATO: effect of polyethylene glycol behenate on lubricant capa…

2003

The aim of this paper is to study the lubricant capacity of Compritol HD5 ATO, a glyceryl and polyethylene glycol dibehenate, obtained by atomization. This material is compared to Compritol 888 ATO, constituted only by glyceryl dibehenate. First, this study verifies that Compritol HD5 ATO and Compritol 888 ATO present the same granular characteristics and that their mixes with Lactopress present no structural differences. Secondly, in term of compressibility and cohesiveness, the use of Compritol 888 ATO or Compritol HD5 ATO with Lactopress does not involve any significant modification. Finally, the minor difference of lubricant capacity between Compritol HD5 ATO and Compritol 888 ATO has n…

Effect of mode of operation, substrate and final electron acceptor on single-chamber membraneless microbial fuel cell operating with a mixed community

2018

Abstract Waste minimization and circular thinking are to be achieved in order to cope with the limited amount of resources of our planet. In this perspective, bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) can contribute to the global balance with their ability to extract chemical residual energy from wastewater and transform it directly into electrical current. BESs development has been limited by the cost connected to reactor design, in which membranes and cathode catalyst constituted a major drawback. In this paper we report the optimization process of a simple reactor without membranes or precious catalyst that produced 47.1 mW m−2, which is more than what achieved with configurations including mem…

Quantifying the contribution of nitrification and denitrification to the nitrous oxide flux using 15N tracers.

2006

8 pages; International audience; Microbial transformations of nitrification and denitrification are the main sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) from soils. Relative contributions of both processes to N2O emissions were estimated on an agricultural soil using 15N isotope tracers (15NH4+ or 15NO3-), for a 10-day batch experiment. Under unsaturated and saturated conditions, both processes were significantly involved in N2O production. Under unsaturated conditions, 60% of N-N2O came from nitrification, while denitrification contributed around 85-90% under saturated conditions. Estimated nitrification rates were not significantly different whatever the soil moisture content, whereas the proportion o…

One-Pot Synthesis of Polysubstituted Pyrrolidines from Aminonitriles

2005

α-Aminonitriles with a mono- or unsubstituted amino group as well as a-(alkylideneamino)nitriles can be employed as easily accessible α-aminocarbanion equivalents. Their α-deprotonation yields stabilized carbanions, whichundergo smooth 1,4-addition to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The resulting δ-ketoα-aminonitriles can be reductively cyclized to form polysubstituted pyrrolidines.

Stół weselny na Górnym Śląsku w procesie przemian

2018

The author focuses on the culinary aspects of wedding celebrations, especially on the wedding culinary heritage in Upper Silesia and its contemporary changes, including locations where the wedding reception is held (private houses, inns, fire station banquet halls, portable wooden halls, restaurants) and decorations at the event (from folk religious art through magical functions to omnipresent kitsch). The article focuses primarily on the wedding menu: from conventional festive cakes (kołocz) to wedding cakes (multi-tiered, iced or sheet ones), from traditional regional cuisine to Hungarian goulash soup, chicken De Volaille, carpaccio, Niçoise salads, etc. The latest fashion for non-alcohol…

Hepatitis C virus infection, HBsAg carrier state and hepatocellular carcinoma

1992

In 1990, a case-control study was conducted in Italy to investigate the possible association between HCV infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Serum samples from 65 subjects with newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma and 99 hospital control subjects were tested for the presence of anti-HCV by second-generation ELISA test; positive sera were assayed by RIBA anti-HCV second-generation test. In addition, samples were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc), and antibodies to HBsAg (anti-HBs). The presence of HCV and/or HBsAg serologic markers was significantly associated with hepatocellular carcinoma risk: the relative ri…
