Introducing migratory flows in life table construction
2012
The purpose of life tables is to describe the mortality behav iour of particular groups. The construction of general life tables is based on death statis tics and census figures of resident populations under the hypothesis of closed demographic sys tem. Among other assumptions, this hypothesis implicitly assumes that entries (immigrants) a nd exits (emigrants) of the population are usually not significant (being almost of the same magnitu de for each age compensating each other). This paper theoretically extends the classical sol ution to open demographic systems and studies the impact of this hypothesis in constructing a life table. In particular, using the data of residential variations m…
RECOVERY OF THE SOUND SPEED FOR THE ACOUSTIC WAVE EQUATION FROM PHASELESS MEASUREMENTS
2018
We recover the higher order terms for the acoustic wave equation from measurements of the modulus of the solution. The recovery of these coefficients is reduced to a question of stability for inverting a Hamiltonian flow transform, not the geodesic X-ray transform encountered in other inverse boundary problems like the determination of conformal factors. We obtain new stability results for the Hamiltonian flow transform, which allow to recover the higher order terms.
On the stability of flat complex vector bundles over parallelizable manifolds
2017
We investigate the flat holomorphic vector bundles over compact complex parallelizable manifolds $G / \Gamma$, where $G$ is a complex connected Lie group and $\Gamma$ is a cocompact lattice in it. The main result proved here is a structure theorem for flat holomorphic vector bundles $E_\rho$ associated to any irreducible representation $\rho : \Gamma \rightarrow \text{GL}(r,{\mathbb C})$. More precisely, we prove that $E_{\rho}$ is holomorphically isomorphic to a vector bundle of the form $E^{\oplus n}$, where $E$ is a stable vector bundle. All the rational Chern classes of $E$ vanish, in particular, its degree is zero. We deduce a stability result for flat holomorphic vector bundles $E_{\r…
Le cône diamant symplectique
2009
Sets versus trial sequences, Hausdorff versus von Mises: “Pure” mathematics prevails in the foundations of probability around 1920
2010
Abstract The paper discusses the tension which occurred between the notions of set (with measure) and (trial-) sequence (or—to a certain degree—between nondenumerable and denumerable sets) when used in the foundations of probability theory around 1920. The main mathematical point was the logical need for measures in order to describe general nondiscrete distributions, which had been tentatively introduced before (1919) based on von Mises’s notion of the “Kollektiv.” In the background there was a tension between the standpoints of pure mathematics and “real world probability” (in the words of J.L. Doob) at the time. The discussion and publication in English translation (in Appendix ) of two …
Bases and quasi-reflexivity in Fréchet spaces
2005
A Frechet space E is quasi-reflexive if, either dim(E″/E) < ∞, or E″[β(E″,E′)]/E is isomorphic to ω. A Frechet space E is totally quasi-reflexive if every separated quotient is quasi-reflexive. In this paper we show, using Schauder bases, that E is totally quasi-reflexive if and only if it is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a countable product of quasi-reflexive Banach spaces. Topological Linearly Ordered Spaces Determined by Pervin's Quasi-uniformity
1994
: In this paper we study those uniform linearly ordered spaces that are determined by Pervin's quasi-uniformity. In particular, we show that the space of all countable ordinals is determined by a unique quasi-uniformity.
Optimizing LUT-Based RTM Inversion for Semiautomatic Mapping of Crop Biophysical Parameters from Sentinel-2 and -3 Data: Role of Cost Functions
2014
Inversion of radiative transfer models (RTM) using a lookup-table (LUT) approach against satellite reflectance data can lead to concurrent retrievals of biophysical parameters such as leaf chlorophyll content (Chl) and leaf area index (LAI), but optimization strategies are not consolidated yet. ESA's upcoming satellites Sentinel-2 (S2) and Sentinel-3 (S3) aim to ensure continuity of old generation satellite sensors by providing superspectral images of high spatial and temporal resolution. This unprecedented data availability leads to an urgent need for developing robust, accurate, and operational retrieval methods. For three simulated Sentinel settings (S2-10 m: 4 bands, S2-20 m: 8 bands an…
Presence of mycotoxins in ready-to-eat food and subsequent risk assessment
2018
Abstract A study on a set of ready-to-eat meals (n = 328) based on cereals, legumes, vegetables, fish and meat was carried out to determine the natural presence of twenty-seven mycotoxins by both liquid chromatography and gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry in tandem (MS/MS) after QuEChERS extraction. The occurrence of mycotoxins was headed by cereal samples with 35% of samples contaminated by at least one mycotoxin followed by vegetables (32%), legumes (15%) and lastly, 9% of fish and meat samples were contaminated. DON was the most detected mycotoxin in vegetables, meat, fish and cereals with an incidence of 13% 18% 19% and 60%, respectively, and the highest mean levels were foun…
Listeria species in raw and ready-to-eat foods from restaurants.
2001
From September 1999 to March 2000, meat (pork, beef, and chicken), fish (salmon, hake, and sole), vegetable (lettuce and spinach), and Spanish potato omelette samples obtained at restaurants were collected and tested for the occurrence of Listeria spp. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from 3 (2.9%) out of 103 studied samples. Other species isolated were Listeria grayi (13.6%), Listeria innocua (1.9%), Listeria ivanovii (5.8%), Listeria seeligeri (3.9%), and Listeria welshimeri (1.9%). Listeria was neither isolated from beef nor any type of fish.
