Microscopic structural and dynamic features in triphilic room temperature ionic liquids
2019
Here we report a thorough investigation of the microscopic and mesoscopic structural organization in a series of triphilic fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids, namely [1-alkyl, 3-methylimidazolium][(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)(nonafluorobutylsulfonyl)imide], with alkyl=ethyl, butyl, octyl ([C(n)mim][IM14], n = 2, 4, 8), based on the synergic exploitation of X-ray and Neutron Scattering and Molecular Dynamics simulations. This study reveals the strong complementarity between X-ray/neutron scattering in detecting the complex segregated morphology in these systems at mesoscopic spatial scales. The use of MD simulations delivering a very good agreement with experimental data allows us to g…
Pheno-morphological and agronomic diversity among Scorpiurus muricatus (Fabaceae) natural populations collected in Sicily.
2009
SUMMARYPrickly scorpion's tail (Scorpiurus muricatus L.) is a self-reseeding annual legume widely distributed in natural pastures of the Mediterranean area and appreciated by farmers for its productivity, forage quality and palatability. Twenty-eight natural populations were collected throughout Sicily in 2005; two field experiments were carried out in 2005/06 in a hilly area of the Sicilian inland to assess the genetic variation based on pheno-morphological and agronomic characters. The pheno-morphological traits observed were analysed using a principal component analysis (PCA). The first four components of PCA (eigenvalues >1) explained 0·84 of the total variation. Similarities obtaine…
Coexistence of Mediterranean tits: A multidimensional approach
2013
[EN] Differential traits (e.g., feeding at different heights in trees) have evolved to allow the coexistence of putative competitors; such traits have been well studied in small passerines (e.g., Paridae), mainly during the winter. However, few studies have been carried out during the breeding season, when competition could be more intense. We applied here a multidimensional approach, examining ecological (prey type and size, and nesting habitat characteristics) and life history (timing of maximum nestling food demand) traits that might help to explain the coexistence of great (Parus major), crested (Lophophanes cristatus), and coal (Periparus ater) tits breeding in a Mediterranean pine for…
On-Demand Isolation of Bacteriophages Against Drug-Resistant Bacteria for Personalized Phage Therapy
2015
Bacteriophages are bacterial viruses, capable of killing even multi-drug resistant bacterial cells. For this reason, therapeutic use of phages is considered as a possible alternative to conventional antibiotics. However, phages are very host specific in comparison to wide-spectrum antibiotics and thus preparation of phage-cocktails beforehand against pathogens can be difficult. In this study, we evaluate whether it may be possible to isolate phages on-demand from environmental reservoir. We attempted to enrich infectious bacteriophages from sewage against nosocomial drug-resistant bacterial strains of different medically important species in order to evaluate the probability of discovering …
Competition and R&D in retail banking under expense preference behaviour
2006
Cost-reducing R&D activities are examined in the context of a retail banking sector where some entities exhibit an expense preference. The results reveal that the effects from R&D interact with the effects in the previous literature in shaping the equilibrium configuration.
Congestion management rules and trading strategies in the Spanish electricity market
2009
Abstract This paper analyses the economic incentives embodied in the rules governing the resolution of transmission constraints in the Spanish wholesale electricity market and the way these incentives may have influenced on the trading behaviour of both the generators and the demand side. The evidence obtained is consistent with them responding to these incentives. In particular, buyers would respond to the way congestion costs are billed to them by abandoning the daily market in favour of the intraday market as far as possible. Additionally, some strategic generators may have been prompted the system operator to require them to inject electricity into the system to solve network congestion…
Il medioevo fantastico di Maria Accascina. Il soffitto di Palazzo Chiaramonte. Bataille e Documents
2022
How perceived security appears in the commercialisation of internet banking
2005
Security has been widely recognised as one of the main barriers to the adoption of internet innovation. Many studies suggest that firms operating on the internet must first convince their customers about the security of internet as a medium. This paper presents empirical evidence that Finnish internet customers do not consider internet banking as unsecured as past literature suggests. In fact, our research findings suggest that Finnish internet banking services are considered secured in all our target groups, which present a vast sample of today's Finnish internet customers. However, mobile banking customers seem to have somewhat more security concerns than internet banking customers. Our e…
