CADEM: calculate X-ray diffraction of epitaxial multilayers

2017

This article presents a powerful yet simple program, based on the general one-dimensional kinematic X-ray diffraction (XRD) theory, which calculates the XRD patterns of tailor-made multilayers and thus enables quantitative comparison of measured and calculated XRD data. As the multilayers are constructed layer by layer, the final material stack can be entirely arbitrary.

Optimization of impurity profile for p-n junction in heterostructures

2005

We analyze the dopant diffusion in p-n-junction in heterostructure, by solving the diffusion equation with space-varying diffusion coefficient. For a step-wise spatial distribution we find the optimum annealing time to decrease the p-n-junction thickness and to increase the homogeneity of impurity concentration in p or n regions.

Frequency and Characterization of Movement Disorders in Anti-IgLON5 Disease

2021

Background and ObjectivesAnti-IgLON5 disease is a recently described neurologic disease that shares features of autoimmunity and neurodegeneration. Abnormal movements appear to be frequent and important but have not been characterized and are underreported. We describe the frequency and types of movement disorders in a series of consecutive patients with this disease.MethodsIn this retrospective, observational study, the presence and phenomenology of movement disorders were assessed with a standardized clinical questionnaire. Available videos were centrally reviewed by 3 experts in movement disorders.ResultsSeventy-two patients were included. In 41 (57%), the main reason for initial consult…

The pleiotropic effects of antiplatelet therapies

2019

Percutaneous coronary intervention is the most often used method for coronary revascularization. Stenting restores blood perfusion to ischemic areas, but it also causes mechanical disruption of the atheromatous plaque and the nearby endothelium, stimulating the activation of platelets. In a similar way, platelets are activated by thrombin exposure in the setting of plaque rupture. The interaction between platelets, oxidative stress and inflammation is an important factor determining the extent and severity of vascular dysfunction observed in these settings. Platelets activated by the vessel trauma release inflammatory and mitogenic mediators into the vascular microenvironment, activating le…

Elevated serum eotaxin levels in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

2002

OBJECTIVE: Eotaxin is a recently characterized chemokine with potent and selective chemotactic activity for eosinophils. Previous studies indicating that eosinophils accumulate and become activated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) led us to hypothesize that eotaxin is potentially involved in the pathophysiology of IBD and, therefore, that eotaxin would be increased in the serum of patients with IBD. The objective of this study was to test those assumptions. METHODS: We investigated 72 patients with IBD, 35 with ulcerative colitis, and 37 with Crohn’s disease. A total of 27 patients had active and 45 inactive disease; 26 were receiving corticosteroids. Eotaxin serum levels were determined…

A comparative double blind study of nasal dressing sponge® versus merocel® as nasal pack after nasal surgery

2021

Introduction: Nasal packing is a common procedure used to ensure haemostasis after nasal surgery. Materials and Methods: A prospective, randomized, controlled and double-blinded study was conducted on 80 consecutive subjects to investigate whether using Nasal Dressing Sponge® (NDS) instead of simple Merocel® might improve patients' postoperative experience of nasal packing. Results: During the stay of the tampons no differences were noticed between the two groups as regards the postoperative pain. When it comes to pain during the packing removal, patients complained of worse symptoms in the side packed with Merocel. There was no bleeding after the removal of Merocel, whereas 5,6% patients w…

Colorectal cancer defeating? Challenge accepted!

2013

Colorectal tumours are actually considered as aberrant organs, within it is possible to notice a different stage of cell growth and differentiation. Their origin is reported to arise from a subpopulation of tumour cells endowed with, just like the healthy stem cells, self-renewal and aberrant multi-lineage differentiation capacity likely to be called colorectal cancer stem cells (CCSCs). Cancer stem cells (CSCs) fate, since their origin, reflects the influences from their microenvironment (or niche) both in the maintenance of stemness, in promoting their differentiation, and in inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition, responsible of CSCs dissemination and subsequent formation of metastat…

Silymarin compounds: Chemistry, innovative extraction techniques and synthesis

2020

Abstract Silymarin complex consisting of four flavonolignans (silychristin, silydianin, silibinin and taxifolin) has been used from ancient times in both traditional European and Asian medicine for liver disorders treatment. Moreover, over the last years, the anticancer activity of these compounds against various types of cancer cells (e.g., breast, skin, colon, cervix, ovary, prostate, lung and hepatocellular cancers, among others) has been demonstrated. Therefore, at this stage of development, food and pharmaceutical interest have shown an increased interested in the recovery of these molecules. Conventional solvent extraction has been traditionally used to recover silymarin complex from …

Frame-based and frameless endoscopic procedures in the third ventricle.

1997

Stereotactic guidance is useful for planning an accurate trajectory to the third ventricle. A guiding block with a ball joint was developed for frame-based endoscopy and adaptors for arm-based and armless navigation systems. Between 1992 and 1996, 52 patients were operated on endoscopically in the third ventricle under stereotactic guidance. Thirty-eight ventriculostomies, 13 biopsies and 10 cystic lesions were performed. The coordinates of two points were calculated; one in the foramen of Monro and the second in the third ventricle. The ventriculostomy was performed under endoscopic control bluntly with a Fogarty catheter in front of the basilar artery. Twenty-seven (71%) of the patients h…
