Case study on teachers’ contribution to children’s participation in Finnish preschool classrooms during structured learning sessions

2013

The main aim of this study was to identify different teaching practices and explore the types of opportunities that they provide for children’s participation in four different Finnish preschool classrooms for 6-year olds during structured learning sessions. Observational data of four preschool teachers were analyzed according to the principles of qualitative content analysis. Three themes of teachers’ practices were identified, which described the key practices through which teachers influence children’s participation, namely, through discussion and conversations; by referring to shared rules and managing the classroom; and through demonstrating pedagogical sensitivity and understanding tow…

La Philosophy for Children and Community come pratica didattica e sostegno educativo alla genitorialità

2022

The aim of this paper is to present the curriculum of Philosophy for Children and highlight its pedagogical and didactic aspect. This method enhances the promotion of co-construction of thought thanks to the creation of a community of inquiry. At the heart of this methodology, there are the philosophical novels, which allows children to experiment with philosophical practices. These philo sophical novels (written by Lipman, author of the curriculum) present different themes and are aimed at specific age groups. The Philosophy for Children method has not been used only with chil dren, but it is now widely used in various contexts of adult educa tion, in the analogous form of the Philosophy f…

A Descriptive Case Analysis of Instructional Teaching Practices in Finnish Preschool Classrooms

2013

This study examined the diversity of teaching practices to illuminate the qualitative variety of instructional teaching practices among preschool teachers. Further, teachers' self-rated educational goals were explored to complement the multifaceted nature of preschool teachers' instructional teaching practices. The study was carried out as a case study. The cases were used to describe the qualitative variety of Finnish preschool teachers' instructional practices in authentic classroom situations among groups of 6-year-old children. The authors' previous study revealed four distinct latent profiles of teaching practices in preschool classrooms based on 49 observed preschool teachers, using t…

2013

This paper illustrates a research method appropriate for researchers examining teaching practices and teacher training in poor countries. The method of research described here does not compare with large scale studies in terms of sample size, scientific rigor, and sophisticated statistical analysis. We believe, however, that it can, provide valid information sufficient in accuracy for policy making. Most importantly, we believe, this method offers a feasible way for national researchers to explore why teachers teach as they do in their country. A fundamental assumption is that once in the classroom most teachers learn little more about teaching. In the absence of any systematic feedback or …

2019

This research is based on an analytical model designed to evaluate the institutional conditions that affect the development of teaching in Ibero-America. The case studies correspond to six universities in: Argentina, Spain, Mexico and Venezuela 2. Were identified the common challenges and the differentiated needs faced by the development, with quality, of university teaching. It was concluded that the context is a predominant variable that impacts the exercise of the teaching function and that this is the most important academic activity with an impact on the quality of higher education.

Impact of the "salary scholarship" impact profile and student achievement.

2013

In Spain, within the framework of the Strategy 2015, the implementation of scholarships, grants and wages especially adapted to the new situation of the European Higher Education, intended to ensure access to university education to those most disadvantaged social groups economically. This research makes an ex post facto, descriptive-comparative aimed at assessing the impact of the grant salary, as an economic factor, on equity, access and academic performance in the first year of college. The study was conducted with a total of 10,394 new students in the 2010-11 cohort at the University of Barcelona, from the database from the institution itself. A total of 642 students agreed to grant sal…

Many national and international studies have concentrated on the evaluation and promotion of the inclusive qualities of schools. It is a complex issue which has led to wide debate and a variety of contributions which in turn highlight the need for a tool capable of measuring the inclusive quality of our schools in order to determine the empirical evidence regarding this topic. This article presents the results of an experiment in drafting a questionnaire in order to measure the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by its pupils. The questionnaire is intended as an evaluation and selfevaluation tool that enables the inclusive quality generated by the context to be measured as it is perceived by pupils. At the same time the tool allows reflection processes amongst teachers to be promoted so that they can implement educational activities which contribute to the planning and control of inclusive teaching practices. This contribution puts forward an original tool for measuring the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by pupils attending primary school in several Sicilian towns. It was administered in its definitive version to a sample of 1652 children. The psychometric properties of the tool and the significance it can hold in the areas of planning in research and of educational design are presented in this paper.Settore M-PED/03 - Didattica E Pedagogia Speciale

2014

In France, there is little research on university teaching and focusing specifically on teaching practices. This present research aims to explore this concept in two different ways. The first part focuses on the description of the practices implemented by teachers during first-year university lectures. Using in situ observation of lecture practices of 49 teachers from five programmes, we first show that teachers’ practices mostly rely on traditional methods as defined by Bru (2006). However, we show a variety of practices among teachers. The second part of this research updates our knowledge of the implications of these practices on student studies. 734 freshmen from these sectors were inte…
