Authentic Audiovisual Resources to Actualise Legal Interpreting Education

New Zealand Aotearoa is an English-medium country and a home to a high number of minority migrant groups speaking over 160 different languages. To cater to the needs of such a diverse population, the Interpreting and Translation Team at Auckland University of Technology has developed a language-neutral pedagogy using a range of innovative teaching methods. Implementation of an Innovation in Education Project in the Degree of English Studies at the University of Valencia

Begona.Clavel@uv.es The 21st century is and surely will be characterized by multiple and dramatic changes at all levels, but especially in the field of technology. This paper examines how some of these changes influence the way in which languages in general, and English in particular, are taught nowadays. We show how we have applied an Innovation in Education Project methodology in some modules in the degree in English Studies. Our most important instrument is our E-Learning platform (Aula Virtual) which offers us numerous ways in which to bridge the gap between our students and the team of teachers and permits our students to learn through a more interactive type of methodology.

L2 English derivational knowledge : Which affixes are learners more likely to recognise?

Knowledge of derivational morphology is considered an important aspect of vocabulary knowledge both in L1 (mother tongue) and L2 (second or foreign language) English language learning. However, it is still not clear whether different derivational affixes vary in their (learning) difficulty. The present study examines whether Bauer and Nation’s (1993) teaching order of L2 English affixes can account for the difficulty learners have with recognising the affixes. Bilingual preschool education is under researched compared with bilingual school education. There is also a lack of research on bilingual preschool teachers’ agency and how they negotiate between two languages in the classroom. We examined the language practices of five bilingual preschool teachers working within three different socio-linguistic settings, in Finland (Finnish–Swedish and Russian–Finnish contexts) and Israel (an Arabic–Hebrew context) and interviewed the teachers about their use of languages in the classroom.
