The large number of pace-makers introduced transvenously has resulted in increasing the number of complications, amongst which infections and dislocations are prominent. It is usually necessary to remove the electrode, which can be attempted percutaneously by using a Dormia basket, a loop or forceps. Amongst the complications of this procedure are tears to the myocardium, with the risk of pericardial tamponade, or tears of the tricuspid valve leading to tricuspid insufficiency. Consequently, thoracic surgical intervention should be available if necessary. Four successful procedures are described.

BACKGROUND: Retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) is a subtype of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with particularly bad prognosis. Diverse treatment modalities are performed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective review on the treatment results of 41 consecutive patients from 1 / 2003 to 12 / 2005 with RAP stage 1 - 3 (Yannuzzi classification), who were treated with laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide (IVT). Frequency and characteristics of lesions of the medial collateral ligaments (MCL) were studied by MRI in 155 patients with trauma to the knee. There were abnormalities of the MCL in 38% of cases with ligamentous injuries and in 27% these were combined with meniscal tears. 11% of these patients showed isolated rupture of MCL and as a result of the MRI findings were treated conservatively. By means of T2*-weighted images the individual lesions could be accurately localised. Characteristic findings have been defined.

The focus of this article is to review recent techniques in proteomic analysis of ocular fluids. These fluids include tears, aqueous humor, and vitreous, they will also be compared to serum analysis. Furthermore, we attempt to summarize some disease correlated biomarkers in ocular fluids that were discovered through different proteomic techniques in eye diseases like dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, uveitis, or diabetic retinopathy. This review is trying to point out the importance of these biomarkers for clinical applications.

Dry eye syndrome occurs very frequently in the industrial world. In the United States, one of five people, 59 millions patients, suffer from symptoms of this disease (Eagle Vision, Yankelovich and Partners, 1997), and the number of patients has doubled in the last 10 years. 1-4 Diagnosis and treatment of dry eye syndrome are challenging. In fact, a curative therapy of this disease does not exist. Dry eye is a disease with various symptoms resulting from aqueous, mucin or lipid deficiency. Different diseases, among them Sjogren’s syndrome, can cause this deficiency, but most patients do not have accompanying disorders.
