Ferrocenyl glycopeptides as electrochemical probes to detect autoantibodies in multiple sclerosis patients' será

2008

Abstract Glycopeptide analogues of CSF114(Glc), modified at N-terminus with new ferrocenyl carboxylic acid and a new ferrocenyl-thiphosphino amino acid, were used to implement a new electrochemical biosensor for autoantibody detection in multiple sclerosis. The ferrocenyl moiety of these "electrochemical probes" did not affect autoantibody recognition both in SP-ELISA and in inhibition experiments. By electrochemical monitoring the interactions of the modified peptides Fc-CSF114(Glc) and 4-FcPhP(S)Abu-CSF114(Glc) with the autoantibodies, we demonstrated that autoantibodies could be detected with a sensitivity comparable to ELISA method. The new electrochemical probes can be proposed to char…

Temporal variability analysis reveals biases in electronic health records due to hospital process reengineering interventions over seven years

2019

[EN] Objective To evaluate the effects of Process-Reengineering interventions on the Electronic Health Records (EHR) of a hospital over 7 years. Materials and methods Temporal Variability Assessment (TVA) based on probabilistic data quality assessment was applied to the historic monthly-batched admission data of Hospital La Fe Valencia, Spain from 2010 to 2016. Routine healthcare data with a complete EHR was expanded by processed variables such as the Charlson Comorbidity Index. Results Four Process-Reengineering interventions were detected by quantifiable effects on the EHR: (1) the hospital relocation in 2011 involved progressive reduction of admissions during the next four months, (2) th…

Technical-Tactical Actions Used to Score in Taekwondo: An Analysis of Two Medalists in Two Olympic Championships

2019

Research in taekwondo has traditionally focused on specific aspects athletes' overall technical and tactical skills, while ignoring other important issues such as identifying how successful athletes score points. The aim of the current study was to follow two medalists through two Olympic Championships (2012 and 2016) to discover the effective patterns associated with scoring in taekwondo using an observational methodology. An ad-hoc taekwondo observational tool was used to codify the actions performed by the athletes. An observational descriptive and multivariate analysis of 1,688 actions performed by the athletes was conducted. A lag sequential and polar coordinate analysis was performed …

Assessing Frequency Domain Causality in Cardiovascular Time Series with Instantaneous Interactions

2009

Summary Background: The partial directed coherence (PDC) is commonly used to assess in the frequency domain the existence of causal relations between two time series measured in conjunction with a set of other time series. Although the multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model traditionally used for PDC computation accounts only for lagged effects, instantaneous effects cannot be neglected in the analysis of cardiovascular time series. Objectives: We propose the utilization of an extended MVAR model for PDC computation, in order to improve the evaluation of frequency domain causality in the presence of zero-lag correlations among multivariate time series. Methods: A procedure for the identif…

A discrete mathematical model for addictive buying: Predicting the affected population evolution

2011

This paper deals with the construction of a discrete mathematical model for addictive buying. Firstly, identifications of consumers buying behavior are performed by using multivariate statistical techniques based on real data bases and sociological approaches. Then the population is divided into appropriate groups according to the level of overbuying and a discrete compartmental model is constructed. The future short term addicted population is computed assuming several future economic scenarios. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

FSHD muscular dystrophy region gene 1 binds Suv4-20h1 histone methyltransferase and impairs myogenesis.

2013

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is an autosomal dominant myopathy with a strong epigenetic component. It is associated with deletion of a macrosatellite repeat leading to over-expression of the nearby genes. Among them, we focused on FSHD region gene 1 (FRG1) since its over-expression in mice, Xenopus laevis and Caenorhabditis elegans, leads to muscular dystrophy-like defects, suggesting that FRG1 plays a relevant role in muscle biology. Here we show that, when over-expressed, FRG1 binds and interferes with the activity of the histone methyltransferase Suv4-20h1 both in mammals and Drosophila. Accordingly, FRG1 over-expression or Suv4-20h1 knockdown inhibits myogenesis. Moreov…

Progressive active mobilization with dose control and training load in critically ill patients (PROMOB): Protocol for a randomized controlled trial

2020

The dose of progressive active mobilization is still uncertain. The purpose of this study is to identify if the addition of a protocol of progressive active mobilization with dose and training load control to usual care is effective in reducing the length of stay in intensive care unit (ICU) and the improvement of the functioning, incidence of ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW), mechanical ventilation duration and mortality rate in patients hospitalized in ICU. It is Double-blind randomised clinical trial. The setting for this trial will be medical and surgical ICU of a university hospital. The study participants will be 118 patients aged> 18 years admitted to ICU for less than 72 hours. Partici…

New technology for archaeological museums: three case studies on the Mediterranean coast

2013

The archaeology/technology combination has long been accepted with the second being seen to be at the service of the study and conservation of the first. Much less immediate and recent is the combination between the archaeological museum and technology for communication. Certainly, becauseof its ability to express dynamic and immediate information, new technology, if well integrated in the exhibition and well calibrated with the presence of original objects, can be a very effective support to the public’s appreciation. The paper aims to provide some examples that seem to adequately describe good integration practices between the authentic and the mediated, between the original and the virtu…

The Museum of London, a City Museum as Narrative Exhibition

2014

From temples of sacred objects to repositories of colonial trophies and from monuments of civility to spaces for self-expression, the shape and the appeal of museums through history has been fashioned to hold particular collections of objects. Moreover the museums have been also designed to adapt to particular display techniques appropriate for a particular collection. In the last century, a period of structural reinvention in the design and shaping of the exhibitions, the museum making is challenging, creative, and complex. The ‘new museum making’ includes emotive exhibitions within communicative buildings in order to create ‘narrative experiences’ which integrate objects, spaces, and audi…

Polyphasic identification of yeasts isolated from bark of cork oak during the manufacturing process of cork stoppers.

2003

A two-step protocol was used for the identification of 52 yeasts isolated from bark of cork oak at initial stages of the manufacturing process of cork stoppers. The first step in the identification was the separation of the isolates into groups by their physiological properties and RFLPs of the ITS-5.8S rRNA gene. The second step was the sequencing of the D1/D2 domains of the 26S rRNA gene of selected isolates representing the different groups. The results revealed a predominance of basidiomycetous yeasts (11 species), while only two species represented the ascomycetous yeasts. Among the basidiomycetous yeasts, members representing the species Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae and Rhodotorula n…
