N 1 -methylnicotinamide (MNA + ) has until recently been thought to be a biologically inactive product of nicotinamide metabolism in the pyridine nucleotides pathway. However, the latest observations imply that MNA + may exert antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects through direct action on the endothelium. Complexity of expression of intermediate filament proteins, including glial filament protein, in endometrial and ovarian adenocarcinomas

The expression patterns of intermediate filament proteins of primary and metastatic endometrial (n = 18) and ovarian (n = 24) adenocarcinomas were analyzed by immunocytochemistry using a panel of specific antibodies and by gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal preparations, followed by immunoblotting. All cells of all endometrial adenocarcinomas studied contained the "simple epithelial"-type cytokeratins (CKs) 8, 18, and (mostly) 19, with variable numbers of cells also positive for CK 7 and vimentin. In gliomas one can observe distinct histopathological tissue properties, such as viable tumor cells, necrotic tissue or regions where the tumor infiltrates normal brain. A first screening between the different intratumoral histopathological tissue properties would greatly assist in correctly diagnosing and prognosing gliomas. Antisera to CEA were used for the immunohistochemical localization and quantification of this antigen in 120 Bouin-fixed, paraffin embedded mammary carcinomas. These results were compared to tumor type, grading, staging, biochemical receptor status, cytosolic CEA-levels of the same tumors, and preoperative plasma CEA-levels. Mammary carcinomas were usually characterized by a low percentage of CEA-positive tumor cells: 50.9% of the cases contained more than 5% CEA-positive tumor cells and were therefore defined as being CEA-histopositive in this study. Immunohistochemical localization of filaggrin in benign, premalignant and malignant cervical tissue.

Epithelial distribution of filaggrin, a histidine-rich protein related to squamous terminal differentiation, was investigated in 87 cervical biopsies using an avidin-biotin-peroxidase technique with a monoclonal anti-human filaggrin antibody (AKH1). Normal squamous cervical epithelium exhibited a positive homogeneous immunoperoxidase stain in the upper parabasal, intermediate and superficial cell layers. Similar findings were obtained in cervical condylomas, although full-thickness staining was observed in 35.7% of the cases (P < 0.001). [A composite indicator for maternity hospital classification].

OBJECTIVES: to propose a composite indicator for maternity hospital classification. DESIGN: descriptive analysis of maternity hospitals through a composite indicator and analysis of its association with infant readmissions within 30 days from the childbirth. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 56 maternity units in Sicily, accounting for 44.436 newborns in 2014. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: infant readmission rates within 30 days from the childbirth. RESULTS: low-level hospitals show higher infant readmission rates (odds ratio: 1.3) which may be seen as a signal of inappropriateness of maternity care.
