Empowering New Agents of Civil Society or Fostering Good Citizens? : Framing Youth Participation in Finnish Youth Organizations

This article investigates how nationwide Finnish youth civil society organizations frame their approaches to youth participation. By analyzing data from interviews, websites, and annual reports, five frames are identified. The frames differ in how they define the purpose of participation, whom they see as the main actors, and what kind of member, volunteer, or other participant roles they provide to young people. Three frames are used as master frames that see young people as agents, learners, or targets of support; two subordinate frames expand the scopes of the organizations. Only some of the frames include any concept of integrating young people into the civil society. peerReviewed

Phytoplankton group identification with chemotaxonomic biomarkers: In combination they do better

Chemotaxonomic biomarkers are needed to monitor and evaluate the nutritional quality of phytoplankton communities. The biomolecules produced by different phytoplankton species do not always follow genetic phylogeny. Therefore, we analyzed fatty acids, sterols, and carotenoids from 57 freshwater phytoplankton strains to evaluate the usability of these biomolecules as chemotaxonomic biomarkers. We found 29 fatty acids, 34 sterols, and 26 carotenoids in our samples. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan suomen kielen ja kirjallisuuden oppimäärän tavoitteiden (Opetushallitus 2014) tulkintaa ja arviointikriteerien soveltamista kansallisessa oppimistulosarvioinnissa. Päättöarvioinnin hyvän osaamisen (arvosana 8) kriteereitä sovellettiin oppimistulosarvioinnissa tehtävien laadintaan ja oppilaan taitotason määrittelyyn. Arviointiprosessin kuluessa havaittiin, että eri sisältöalueiden hyvän osaamisen kriteerit ovat vahvasti tulkinnanvaraisia. Kriteerit limittyvät sekä sisältöalueiden, esimerkiksi tekstien tuottamisen, sisällä että niiden välillä, esimerkiksi vuorovaikutustilanteissa toimimisen ja tekstien tulkitsemisen välillä. Sample allocation for efficient model-based small area estimation

We present research results on sample allocations for efficient model-based small area estimation in cases where the areas of interest coincide with the strata. Although model-assisted and model-based estimation methods are common in the production of small area statistics, utilization of the underlying model and estimation method are rarely included in the sample area allocation scheme. Therefore, we have developed a new model-based allocation named g1-allocation. For comparison, one recently developed model-assisted allocation is presented.
