Temperamentally inhibited children are at risk for poorer maths performance : self-concept as mediator
2020
AbstractIt has repeatedly been found that temperamental inhibition and low academic achievement are associated with each other: children with cautious and wary or shy behaviour are at risk for low academic achievement. Several suggestions about the mechanism behind this association have been made, these highlighting for example, the fewer learning opportunities of cautious and wary children and more negative interaction between teachers and inhibited children. However, the empirical studies about these mechanisms are rare and, thus, they have remained unclear. This study examined whether children’s maths-related self-concept of ability acts as a mediator between their temperamental inhibiti…
Pētījumā tika izmantotas Bērnu temperamenta aptauja (ļoti īsā forma), (Very Short Form of the Children’s Behavior Questionnaire), Pirmsskolas vecuma bērnu uzvedības novērtējuma anketas (1,5-5 gadi) vecāku forma (Child Behavior Checklist 1 ½ - 5…
Pirmsskolas vecuma bērnu temperamenta, uzvedības problēmu un mātes izmantoto audzināšanas paradumu savstarpējās saistības
2015
Pētījuma mērķis bija noskaidrot kādas saistības pastāv starp pirmsskolas vecuma bērnu temperamentu, uzvedības problēmām un mātes izmantotajiem audzināšanas paradumiem. Pētījumā piedalījās 55 mātes, kurām ir bērns, vecumā no 3-6 gadiem (54,54% meitenes; 45,46% zēni). Pētījumā tika izmantota Bērna uzvedības novērtēšanas aptauja vecākiem (CBCL/ 1 ½ - 5), Bērna temperamenta aptauja (ļoti īsā forma) (CBQ-VSF) un Alabamas audzināšanas aptauja pirmsskolas vecuma bērniem (APQ-PR). Pētījumā tika iegūtas vairākas statistiski nozīmīgas sakarības. Statistiski nozīmīgas saistības savā starpā uzrādīja bērna uzvedības problēmas gan ar mātes izmantotajiem audzināšanas paradumiem, gan bērna temperamentu. Kā…

School-related stress among sixth-grade students : Associations with academic buoyancy and temperament
2019
The present study examined to what extent sixth-grade students' academic buoyancy and temperament contributed to their school-related stress. A total of 845 students rated their school-related stress at the beginning and end of the school year and their academic buoyancy at the beginning of the year. Parents rated students' effortful control and negative affectivity. The results showed that high academic buoyancy, high effortful control, and low negative affectivity at the beginning of the school year were related to lower school-related stress at the end of the school year, after controlling for gender, GPA, and previous level of stress. Effortful control and negative affectivity had no si…

Socioemotional functioning across the transition to lower secondary school : The role of temperament and relationships with mothers and teachers
2023
This Finnish longitudinal study investigated the role of relationships with mothers (n = 631) and teachers (n = 56), and adolescents' (n = 848; 53.9% girls, 46.1% boys) temperament in the development of the adolescents' socioemotional functioning during the transition to lower secondary school (Grade 6 to Grade 7; age in Grade 6: M = 12.32, SD = 0.36). The results showed that mother–adolescent closeness predicted a higher level and teacher–adolescent closeness predicted a smaller decrease in prosocial behavior. Teacher–adolescent conflict predicted a higher level, and mother–adolescent conflict predicted an increase in externalizing problems. Only temperament predicted internalizing problem…
Children's Temperament and Academic Skill Development During First Grade: Teachers' Interaction Styles as Mediators.
2015
The present study followed 156 Finnish children (Mage = 7.25 years) during the first grade of primary school to examine to what extent parent- and teacher-rated temperament impacts children's math and reading skill development during the first grade, and the extent to which this impact would be mediated by teachers' interaction styles with the children. The results showed that the impact of children's low task orientation and negative emotionality on their math skill development was mediated via teachers' behavioral control and, among girls, also by psychological control. The negative impact of children's inhibition on math skill development, in turn, was not mediated via teachers' interact…
