Broadband Terahertz Signal Processing and Multiplexing with Four-wire Waveguides

2022

We demonstrate a new waveguide geometry, namely a four-wire waveguide, which acts as a terahertz polarization-division multiplexer and a novel platform to realize versatile signal-processing functionalities into independent channels over a broadband terahertz frequency range.

Universal charts for optical difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain

2010

We present a universal and rigorous approach to study difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain, keeping the number of degrees of freedom to a minimum, through the definition of a suitable figure of merit. The proposed method relies on suitably normalized charts, that enable to predict the optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency of any system based on wave propagation in quadratic nonlinear materials. The predictions of our approach are found to be in good agreement with the best experimental results reported to date, enabling also to estimate the d22 nonlinear coefficient of high quality GaSe.

Spatio-temporal Characteristics of THz Emission at the Subwavelength Scale via Optical Rectification

2011

Highly localized THz emission via optical rectification in thin nonlinear crystals is a promising method for subwavelength microscopy. We present here the peculiar THz spatio-temporal characteristics induced by the non-paraxial generation regime.

Efficient Hot Electron Transfer in Quantum Dot-Sensitized Mesoporous Oxides at Room Temperature

2018

Hot carrier cooling processes represent one of the major efficiency losses in solar energy conversion. Losses associated with cooling can in principle be circumvented if hot carrier extraction toward selective contacts is faster than hot carrier cooling in the absorber (in so-called hot carrier solar cells). Previous work has demonstrated the possibility of hot electron extraction in quantum dot (QD)-sensitized systems, in particular, at low temperatures. Here we demonstrate a room-temperature hot electron transfer (HET) with up to unity quantum efficiency in strongly coupled PbS quantum dot-sensitized mesoporous SnO2. We show that the HET efficiency is determined by a kinetic competition b…

Propagation Length of Antiferromagnetic Magnons Governed by Domain Configurations.

2019

Spintronics seeks to functionalize antiferromagnetic materials to develop memory and logic devices operating at terahertz speed and robust against external magnetic field perturbations. To be useful, such functionality needs to be developed in thin film devices. The key functionality of long-distance spin-transport has, however, so far only been reported in bulk single crystal antiferromagnets, while in thin films, transport has so far been limited to a few nanometers. In this work, we electrically achieve a long-distance propagation of spin-information in thin films of the insulating antiferromagnet hematite. Through transport and magnetic imaging, we demonstrate a strong correlation betwe…

Environmental effects on the natural vibrations of nanoplatelets: a high pressure study.

2017

International audience; Resonant acoustic modes from ultrathin CdS colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) are probed under high pressure using low frequency Raman spectroscopy. In particular we focus on the characterization of the recently evidenced mass load effect that is responsible for a significant downshift of the NPL breathing frequency due to the inert mass of organic ligands. We show that a key parameter in the observation of the mass effect is whether the surrounding medium is able to support THz acoustic wave propagation, at a frequency close to that of the inorganic vibrating core. At low pressures, surface organic molecules show a single particle-like behavior and a strong mass effect …

On recent progress in all-fibered pulsed optical sources from 20 GHz to 2 THz based on multiple four wave mixing approach

2009

International audience; In this paper, we report recent progress on the design of all-fibered ultra-high repetition-rate pulse sources for telecommunication applications around 1550 nm. Based on the nonlinear compression of an initial beat-signal in optical fibers through a multiple four-wave mixing process, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that this simple technique allows an efficient and accurate design of versatile pulse sources having repetition rates and pulse durations ranging from 20 GHz up to 2 THz and from 10 ps up to 110 fs, respectively.

Terahertz Biomedical Imaging: From Multivariate Analysis and Detection to Material Parameter Extraction

2017

Terahertz imaging is an interesting route for biomedical analysis. In particular, cancer imaging is a subject of study for different teams [1,2]. A work is done in Bordeaux in partnership with a hospital to do terahertz analysis of breast tissue. This work is done in reflection with time domain imaging setup with fresh samples. The aim is to accurately assess tumor margins and which could in the future allow a quick validation of the precision of the surgical procedure and know if new surgery should be performed. We have presented in a previous paper [3] the use of automatic methods of image generation with different parameters [4] in order to explore the different contrasts that exist in t…
